That red gem would have been a blood ice gem, dark oppressors can make them, there is another variety that restored MP as well. Along that line, I have a bottle of sweet smelling orange liquid, that I suspect is magic, but I don't have the ap to buy Sense magic, need more hitty skills 
On the subject of exploring stygia, thats something I plan to do after hitting 10th and becoming a demon, cos then you don't need the planar protection (well you will still need it for exploring the angel realm, but not the demon realm)
