Hello, I am the person responsible for leasing Cinderbury and I can confirm I inserted the work "Leading" rather than the LRP group. I've been approached by many LRP groups looking to use the site. I was very impressed by this particular group and what they wanted to achieve.

Regards

Wayne

This isn't where the BBC shot their Iron Age Village reality show some years back, is it? My best memory of that is them all getting food poisoning and the local environmental health bods turning up. Very incongruous.

No it isn't. The "living the Iron-age" programme was shot at Castell Henlly's in Pembrokeshire funnily enough some of the the photo's in their "iron-age overview" section are from there. I used to Re-enact there a few years back a great place . The food poisoning business was the people's fault not the site, they seemed to totally forget any common hygiene practices.

I think this site is the one my group did a few publicity shows for a few years back to try and persuade various people to bestow funding. I'm affraid when i was there it wasn't built:/.. unhelpful i know.. sorry

I'm staying in a yurt in the Forest of Dean next week, just the sort of thing one does with the kids when it's half term holiday in October! As it is only about 20 minutes from both the village and the caves I think I'll have to go and have a mooch, will report back with findings.

It's great to see the post from Wayne here (more communication between the LRP hobby and site owners can only be in all our benefits) and everyone seems to have gone awfully mature about the intentions of this leading LRP group. I'm afraid I still have a few concenrs. I note that the original quote said:

"I am in the process of signing a contract with a leading role play organisation to have sole use of the site. They will then sub let the site to approved role play groups."

It is possible that such a group could be using a powerful mass booking approach to significantly reduce the cost to them from the site owner and then passing that discount on to LRP groups to reduce the cost to the hobby to hire the site. But I'd be surprised. I would expect that a person subletting a site would be including some form of commission or charge. Otherwise it's going to be quite a lot of time and effort to manage something for no reward. This may turn out to be a big benefit for LRP, allowing some semi-professional intermediary to represent LRP to a site owner in all our best interest. Or it could simply be someone interposing an additional layer of administration and cost between the hobby and the site-owner.

Until the scheme is up and actually running we'll never know (and possibly not event then), but I'm afraid I do retain the right to be somewhat suspicious of what is, realistically, an unsual approach for an LRP organisation to take. I find some of the wording vague. Is the LRP group negotiating for sole use of the site or sole use of the site by LRPers? Will the approved role-play groups be people approved by the site or people approved by the leading role play organisation? They seem like quite important questions to me. It's worth noting that a site that advertises on it's website as available for hire by LRP groups is currently unavailable for hire by LRP groups due to being in negotiations with an LRP group. I'd like to see an improvement in availability and pricing for LRP over the current situation before I'd endorse the approach as beneficial to the hobby.

As for using the word "leading", well Wayne has confirmed that they didn't, but get a grip folks. This was a negotiation between a site and an LRP group looking to use the site. For gods sake give them the leeway of being allowed to represent themselves in the most favourable light possible. I don't care if someone claims they are endorsed by god if it brings more sites into use for LRP.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

Just to try to help here,

I used to live at St Briavels, which is a few miles from there, and I visited it about year and half ago while it was nearly finished , although it was mostly up and running at the time. We spoke to the owner and he explained about what went on there. basically they are living history experiences, where people who want something a bit different go for a weekend or a week. It is expensive for the week , as the site says £500. So his intention is obviously to make a commercial site. I would say that if he can get 5 people at the weekend to pay £200 a piece or 5 or 6 people for a week, he is doing well and fair play to him.

The buildings are great and really well made and there is a fine wall with a rampart, and the fellah is obviously an expert in the period. He also gets crafts people and performers up there and he has some ground for gardens and some animals.

As for using it as a LRP site I would say it would be great, but for about 20 people max. The woods are really amazing, all dug out from the iron workings and full of ancient yew trees, but as said before, really dangerous. there are a series of walkways that go around the wood, and you could do some linears, but not with loads of people,

So on the whole, it is a really brilliant living history site and it might be good for a small event, if expensive, unless of course there is a deal for a lrp group.

As to Clearwell caves which are fantastic, and a lot could be done in there, I asked and they said they only rent it out once a year  for a hallowen party, because of the insurance so...

Hope that helps...

M
