I'd always err on the side of apologising too much (though after time out, not mid-game) than not enough when your character has done something that might upset people. Better people think you a soppy bugger than an offensive prick (which is toooften people's automatic assumption about anyone they don't know who's upset them IC).

Sounds to me like you'd be supporting an unpleasant practice (of pillorying people OOC for IC behaviour which you object to) by giving people the impression that roleplaying is something you need to apologise for. It's actually quite short-sightedly selfish - you'll protect yourself, but you're tacitly supporting people being judged OOC on IC behaviour (essentially, emotional blackmail - upset me IC, I'll hate you OOC) - sucks to be the new guy who walks in believing what he's been told about it being a game and that we're all playing roles but doesn't know that roleplay needs to be apologised for me to avert judgement.
When concerned about irrational judgements, the thing to do is to appease them thoroughly?

I definately agree with marianne here. As long as it doesn't hinder roelpley.

Surely it's just good social etiquette?

I don't think I have ever apoligised for incharacter behaviour and i have made possibly more than my fair share of people cry. But I do seek them out afterwards and thank them for some great role playing.

In the LT crew are not allowed kill players full stop.

No one told me that when I was crewing (or is monstering the last battle distinct from crewing?).
Marios

Crew (as in monsters and NPCs) are allowed to kill players in LT, though I believe NPCs are only allowed to kill people if they have a valid IC reason

Well, strictly speaking, crew are not allowed to kill players, however tempting it may seem at times, as that would be illegal. However, crew are allowed to kill player characters, although as Marianne says, we should always be able to show there is a valid IC reason for it.

I should add as an aside that the occasion when I believe it should always govern your IC actions is when you are reffing or crewing an event. In my opinion, you should always be working to let the player characters take the lead, make the revalations and take the moments of glory, regardless of IC motivations.
