So here's a question for you all to start a debate. What is worse:

A) US marines killing civilians (including old women and children if you want a nice appeal to pity)
B) The US military covering it up.
C) The comments (on radio 4 last night - apologese for the paraphrase) of the US citizens in the town where the said Marine unit is based coming out with comments such as "I don't think they did anything wrong" or "a war is a war, it involves killing people and causing damage" or "what's the problem, these people are our enemies".

It depends if the result was intentional or accidental.

It depends if the civilians were knowingly and deliberatly in the combat area. (Ie in a rebel village supporting attacks on US military personnel)

Short of knowing the operational circumstances they were operating under, If artillery or indirect strikes were employed... No real comment.

The american civilians questioned might just be family members, partners friends of serving troops. It is pretty common in any garrison town in the Uk. In those cases I think it is pretty usual to assume that your people were innocent of any wrongdoing unless provided pretty compelling evidence.

It was very much intentional.

There is no "combat area" as after all, the "war" is over, and the US troops are merely fighting "terrorists" now...

should get you started.

The people interviewed were indeed those of the garrison town (didnt i say that?) but how much more evidence do you need?

If the allegations are borne out by further investigation, they and their commanding officers deserve the full weight of the law. That counts for anyone who helped cover it up as well.  They aren't fit to wear a uniform in a military.

Option (A) is clearly the worst, however much sympathy I may feel for their position.
Option (B) was presumably done to prevent a backlash in Iraq which may have precipitated further deaths.
Option (C) is completely understandable.

You feel sympathy for people killing civilians? Interesting, please explain why?

And surely killing civillians and then attempting to cover it up is going to produce worse results (and make you seem even more of an untrustworthy enemy) than simply admitting the error?

And i personally don't understand it. If my brother was caught killing people in cold blood i wouldn't suddenly say what he did was right. It's blind loyalty at it's worst.

Option (C) is completely understandable.

Understandable as in you can see where the US troops are coming from or understandable as in you totally agree that civilians who have done nothing wrong should still be regarded as 'the enemy' and killed?
