I don’t want to be a Naysayer, but I don’t think Event organisers are in the position to do anything for charity. Let’s consider doing more to break even – then I’ll consider doing more for charity.

I am not saying that it is something that needs to be the detriment of the organiser. What relevance is the event's accounts if the organiser has a collection tin for players to put money in? It costs them nothing. Same goes for boxes for collection of stuff to give to charities. Though I suppose there may be some small cost in transporting the stuff to the charity (unless the pick it up).

As for arranging events for disadvantaged kids or the mentally/physically handicapped, there may well be grants and the like for that sort of thing which an organiser could apply for. Kit, equipment etc bought using that grant is applicable to normal LRP so everyone benefits.

With respect to the 'big charity' gripe - fair point. However, an organiser can choose who they donate to and for what reason. It doesn't matter whether you send to a small organisation or a large one. Also, you can consider direct donation - for example giving over dog food or toys means that the charity gets dog food and toys which they give to thier homes not cash which may get spent on administration.

Ok, the point about it not being the best motives is a good one. Though I am not sure that most charity isn't coloured by some ulterior motive or another. But I do think that a little good publicity cannot hurt.

Size of event: I don't think this matters all that much. If every LRP in the country has some form of charity arrangement, no matter how small, at every event they ran the overall effect will be quite massive. If everyone at Maelstrom put a pound in a collection tin then that is over £500. Over a year that adds up to a good couple of thousand. If it were the gathering then it is several thousand just for one event. If 20 people at a small event all put a tin of dog or cat food into a box then that is a number of rescue dogs/cats being fed for a number of days.

We've done two charity events so far. (Ovrdue on the next one)

Admittedly they were in favour of larger charities but we've done them for personal reasons and to help charities who've helped up (Macmillan and British Heart Foundation)

It all helps, and its a nice group thing to do. Raising money for good causes is just good karma if nothing else

Aren't by definition, all LRP'ers mentally handicapped anyway?
Maybe we should apply for grants...

*ahem*

What about big events, could they do more? I have no idea what profit margins LT etc work out (it must be reasonable for Andy King (?) to make some cash out of it) could they donate 50p from every ticket sold to charity?

In that case, don't forget the tax benefits... direct donation from a company to charity is on a reduced tax rate. But, of course, that shouldn't be the motive Though I think it could cause problems as Andy King may need to hire an accountant to let him know how much he is allowed to donate before the tax office gets suspicious

The reason I posted this was because I am considering a dog food donation at our events. Bring a tin of dogfood or a dog toy and we take it to the RSPCA home round the corner to us (assuming Eddie doesn't work out how to use a tin opener on the way home and steal it all... ). When we were there we noticed how few toys they had and it struck a chord.

An option could be:

This event we are encouraging our players to support Charity X. Our standard ticket price is £55, if you the player wish to donate an extra £5, paying £60 in total, we the organizers will match that donation.

LT used to donate 20 Gathering tickets to my Youth project every year, probably still would if asked- and I know that Dumnonii have a load of kids from local schools on their crew,so if your using LRP to work with kids ring Andy King (or Dave Oliver, Matt Pennington, Mark Roberts whoever runs Labrynth etc) you never know.
