I've been thinking about this a lot. We have, in the past, had a lot of bad press. We are only now beginning to overcome that with some fairly well thought out and balanced media pieces but we aren't yet particularly well thought of.

We, as a hobby, do a lot for ourselves but we don't exactly give much 'back to the community'.

So, should we, as a hobby, do more for charity - whether the motives be for our own glorification or for 'the good of mankind'?

Or have we been doing enough for charity and the problem is that we are too shy about it - so shy that I have never heard of it and neither has most of the world?

I've been thinking about some ideas for this, mainly small things.

For example, running charity events - all proceeds go to a charity. Having boxes at events where players can donate money to the charity if they choose to do so. Not just donations of money, of course - what about a box for old clothes to go to oxfam (one place where LRP does help is in keeping charity shops in business, I suppose), a box for dog or catfood or toys to go to the RSPCA or a box for toys for orphans? What about running events specifically for underpriveleged children or mentally/physically handicapped people in order to help build confidence and provide education opportunities?

Any thoughts on this?

Yes, I think we should do more for charity. But then, I think everyone should do more for charity!

I think the charity fund raiser event mentioned on the other thread sounded like great fun to me.

The charity auction works, but its more of a roleplaying convention event. If you could auction a key to permantly hot showers, a fortune would be raised.

In the irish gamers rule post someone told of how in a one off larp, people bought the spells and lammies etc. It seemed to created a big fun event.

And yes it does help create good press for roleplayers in general.

I don’t want to be a Naysayer, but I don’t think Event organisers are in the position to do anything for charity. Let’s consider doing more to break even – then I’ll consider doing more for charity.

Wasn't the LT set up initially to be a charity with the aim of running The Gathering as a charitable concern? Well that was the impression I was given when I attended the inaugural meeting all those years ago.

I know we did an awful lot to und our "home" site. we have painted and decorated it, supplied all their microwaves, cookers and utensils and other bits and bob and generally kept the place afloat. Memeber of our group who can join the work crews ot help clear the place up and rebuild areas and this year the place got a lovely paint job thank to one of the guys. this helps both them and us, we get a nicer site they get a more hireable venue and more people start using it, which is what has happened.

We also regulary support each others charity endevors of which there are a few and have raised a fair bit between us over the years not including our own private donations. Heck I even managed to hand over hundreds of tescos computers for schools tokens thanks to the variou events and other efforts.
I all helps

I'm all for people supporting charities I am not sure it could be standardised as diffrent folk have their prioritie sin diffrent places but I erckon little things like collection tubs on site are pretty cool

Hmmm... I'm not convinced that trying to redeem your bad press by getting good press is anything other than a ver
