I thought I'd add an update on how the work at Borwick is going, we were there a couple of weeks ago.

Last year we used this site, and I was determined not to use it again because of the various flaws. I am pleased to say that I now think it is shaping up as a nice site.

There is now a nice crew area separate to the barn area, with kitchenette and bathroom, and even a double bed available. As players might be using the facilities in here, it is useful to note there is another room off to the other side of the main door that could be used for crew kit and briefing.

The barn is improving, there is still a lot of random stuff in there, but not as much as there used to be. A kitchenette is being added to the barn, which will be useful for players. There are some mattresses and bunks, but its dusty in there so it might not be suitable for people with asthma or allergies.

The IC camp area has a stockade fence. I have my doubts about the moat in front of it from an H&S POV, but we didnt have any accidents. I think mature and sensible players can cope with having a ditch.

There is a little attic area that is accessible from the hill, with two rooms, which would make a nice tomb type area.

The slope up to the barn is still very steep. Some people think its getting worse, I personally think it was always as bad as it is now. Some cars have sustained damage from the hill. However, the site owner is willing to help ferry kit up the hill in his 4 by 4, which admittedly wont help if you've already lost your exhaust, but if you suspect in advance that your car wont make it then it helps. He will also help ferry tents etc down to the IC camp (useful as canvas is so heavy).

There are still a lot of nettles and rabbit holes, but thats called being in the countryside.

I personally think Borwick is shaping up as a nice little site, and the value of a genuinely keen and helpful manager cannot be underestimated.

Have come back from a 5 Day Frail Realities event at Borwick last week , largely agree with the comments its improving . Still needs a bit of work in terms of numbers it could sleep and the washing facilities are basically bare minimum for a longer event however cunning use of the crew shower facilities got us round that. The outside fields and the like are good and give plenty of room to roam , will likely be very nice out there when it gets a bit warmer. Could do with plugging a few of the holes in the walls around the barn door to stop the wind whistling into the main area , the tarps dont really cut it.

All in all coming along, heading in the right direction, loads of potential

If organisers use the room on the left of the door into the flat as the crew room, then the shower is more open to be used by players as well, without walking through anything secret.

Next plans are the kitchenette and increased bunk space, using the next room beyond the crew room.

Agree about the barn...

This site has come on leaps and bounds in the last year, what it really needs is investment now, so bookings helps improve it for the future.

We just ran a 5 day (24-hr time in event) at Borwick, and it went very well, as Pillers says above with a bit of 'creative showering' (ooh-er) we all coped.  We asked for a number of things from the owner and I will post about it when I get a response from him as there were a few things that weren't really what we needed that caused us some trouble, but I think they would be fairly easily sorted out.

The site owner also mentioned that he has been let down by some people's bookings which has caused him troubles.

Feel free to mail me any questions if there is anything I can answer to help out.

Its a problem with any site - you get bookings and they drop out at the last minute. This is why they impose deposits on bookings - to ensure they get some money out of it if you do cancel.

I think the fact that he has taken some of our suggestions in hand and modified the site acordingly is a good thing.

I don't think Borwick will ever make a good roaming LRP site, I'm sorry to say.

I enjoyed the event I had there but I think its more useful to people looking to do tavern based stuff or horror (evil dead or zombie stuff). I really liked the tavern as it had a real stove and was quite rustic. I could get some of suspension of disbelief from it. The rest didn't do much for me and to drive on crazy roads to get there from South Wales, I'm not sure it would have been worth it if there hadn't been such pleasant company.

I think its flogging a dead horse to be honest. While I appreciate the effort to provide another option for LRPers, theres bound to be better places alot closer to most people. I don't think I'll go there again.

There isnt a lot of space to roam, no. But you have to remember that not all systems want that anyway. There was more than enough space for Waypoint and for Pirates last year. There is enough space for a short linear.

Did you actually roam all over the site? Cos there is a whole slew of space further down the hill which is all part of the same site. If you take into account the two fields (the top field and the field with the stockade in it), the wooded hill (linking the two fields together) and the wooded area with paths at the very bottom of the site then there is actually as much space as there is at most scout sites. Ok, a lot of it is flat field which may not be the best for linear LRP. Still ideal for interactive LRP.
