I would argue that the problem is "mentally Ill people" as that is a route I really don't think we should go down, it normally descends into shouting "Nazi" alot (normally from me) but I think I get your point.

Of course the problem is knee-jerk reactions. For reasons that are unlikely to become clear, yesterday I was reading up about the LA Crips gangs. Apparently they used to wear British Knight shoes as the company logo is BK, which the Crips use as a backronym meaning "Blood Killas". So, do we just ban this sick footwear, or look into other possible reasons for gang violence? Like, computer games...

I always find it interesting that when certain groups try and find an enemy, it is always an enemy they already have. I notice the Tories weren't trying to ban classical music after the shipman case for instance.
Porn is a great enemy to pick. As soon as you have decided it is "Sick, wrong, morally diabilitating, corrupting" and so forth, you can automatically disallow anything anyone says it support of it as they are only saying it because they are: "Sick, wrong, morally diabilitated, corrupted".

The worst offenders of this are, for me, the so-called "feminist" groups that oppose porn on the grounds that it is demeaning/degrading to women. This produces the amazing situation where any woman involved in porn, or saying they like it is accused of being sick and corrupted by male dominated mass media society. What they are saying is that no woman can make an automous decision to like what they like, or be involved in an industry they choose. Surely by claiming that choice is invalid by saying it's due to being corrupted, you are negating a womens free right to choose and automatically condemning every woman in the industry. This is the classic "good girl" syndrome you see alot: That evil man corrupted her, there is no way my daughter/sister/wife/girlfriend would CHOOSE to do those things. She must be sick, let's lock her up and pump her full of drugs.
Which, i would've thought, would be something feminist should fight against, not for.

Neither do most chimps.

I dispute this! Certain message boards prove that, not only do chimps have internet access and plenty of free time, they post copius amounts of garbage under names such as Xx BanAnaKi11A_234 xX

Depending on how they word it, and how explicit (rather than implied) the material needs to be wouldn't this new law make a video of a performance of Titus Andronicus illegal?

Presumably, if this killer wins his appeal they'll tear up this law, right? OK, so that's a no. This is yet another area of police led activity where if they can persuade parliament to make everything illegal, then they never have to justify what they do. See how much they scream on the rare occasions when parliament says no.

The other problem I have here is vengeance. This is a case built by a grieving mother who, not satisfied with the conviction of her daughter's killer, however wobbly, wants to punish as many other people as possible. It's not about the sites, it's about the rest of us.

I always find it odd that as so many people die on the roads, nobody ever tries to make cars illegal. Clearly such people would be viewed as mentally ill, but in fact there's no difference here. Cause Celeb seldom has as much weight as the celebs who get involved.

Informed debate has been dead in this country for years. Democracy only exists on election day. I can't remember the last time I heard of MP's backing their constituents over their party. More laws like this, and we won't need an electoral system. I'm a dyed-in-the-wool democrat, and even I'm starting to wonder what it means in this country these days.

>MP's backing their constituents over their party

Best case I remember in recent times were the 'whipless wonders' in the John Major era who stood up to their party and government over a matter of principle to them, had the party whip taken away and wrecked their careers as a result.  Guess the tory party has a better class of rebels with ideals than labour.

It looks to be that parliament / the media suffer from a form of group-think on topics like this, were their egg each other on to a more and more extreme position.

They've worded it so that that's Art, and so can't possibly be "extreme pornography", even if it includes more extreme, violent, and sexual scenes than other videos that are "extreme pornography."

As long as it's the kind of material that the upper/middle class would approve of, it can be Art. If it's more yer working class porn, well, everyone knows that only perverts and murderers watch that kind of appalling filth.

that's a good point, that being seen as respectable art improves something's legal position.  On a different debate, wouldn't that be a good reason to get larp recognised as an artform?
