| Uhm - why use something complex requiring a constant power supply and probably expensive motors or hyraulics - when a simple rubber band will do? Those made of stretcheable fabric used (f.e.) in underwear can usually be found in the sewing department of a large store or specialized store. The 2cm or 1/2"-wide-variant will usually do. I built my mask with an upper piece covering my forehead, the eyes and nose to my upper lips - and a lower piece just covering my lower jaw. The mask fits exactly to my face on the inside. The lower jaw is attached to the upper jaw by two simple joints at about the same place where my jawbone has the joint to my skull. When I move my jaw - the lower jaw of the mask will move down and the mouth of the mask will open. To get the mouth of the mask closed again - I glued a strip (about 2"-2.5" long to provide some flexibility) of the wide, stretcheable fabric mentioned above to the sides of the mask, connecting the lower jaw with the upper jaw at about the cheekbone. The stretcheable fabric will pull the mouth of the mask shut again when my mouth closes. picture of my char, regrettably not showing the inside of the mask. Or You could use springs like in the head (more detailed description) of Varric. Feel free to ask questions, I will try to answer them!

| Sadly that wont work with the costume I have as the jaw is actually above my head when worn and cant be connected to my face. Very cool costume though!

| Quick question about the intended use. Can you use 1 of your hands without it being seen in the costume ? If so the easiest method to use is the good old bike caliper brake method. Spring (or elastic) load the jaw so that it rests in the position you want (either open or closed) and then use a set of bike calipers as the actuating force on the jaw. You just have the brakes handgrip out the way and when you want the jaw to move you just squeeze. You can even control the amount of movement this way. Its how the older animetronics worked and its still used today sometimes for larger models with multiple operators.

| Thats a very interesting idea, although technically they wont have a hand free, I may be able to do something with that, and have some old calipers in the garage... Ill give it some thought. So many great options

Cenobite (9/4/2006) Sadly that wont work with the costume I have as the jaw is actually above my head when worn and cant be connected to my face.Aha, there is more information to be gleamed about the set up. I would have to agree some form of 'rod through pipe' movement is probably your best option. You could run it down you leg to some form of foot pedal (or even squeeze your thighs together .) You could go all out with the right set up and have blinking eyes and the works, or shouldnt I give you even more ideas?
