To play 'devils advocate' in this....I think to me it the case adding too much to the mix and losing focus of what a game setting is.

I like chocolate, rice pudding, jerk chicken, rum ice cream, smoked fish and mead; however would I REALLY want all that baked into one cake? No it taste awful.

Someone has started to moan at Maelstrom costume standards. A visiting reviewer who just didn't like it said "Maelstrom looks like a cheap version of 'Naria' ". I don't think the costumes are that bad by themselves. However looking at the latest photos as a collective group, things seem to be getting too continental. As players are pulling things in different directions, it starting to look like 'LT' instead of Maelstrom's unique look. This why like 'Dumnonii', It has a VERY clear idea of its look.

I've nothing against a 'Steamstrom''. However do it as a new game and new characters.

Removing skills that have been in the system for the last seven years might well annoy some players.

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

Yep, thats why the idea of a 'Maelstrom 2; The next generation'. Very 'Star trek' I know, but I would saves losing identity. Instead of something looking like a big messy of lumpy goo that don't look like anything.

Having just attended my sixth PD event, I am perhaps still all starry-eyed and newbified, but I feel like Maelstrom has a really distinct identity, in terms of ethos and in terms of aesthetics. I really don't feel the sense of stagnation that people have been talking about recently, but then I wasn't around for the Good Old Days (tm) where Men Were Men and Wemics Were Wemics and, I imagine, All This Was Fields. For me, Strom is full of excitement and running around and blagging my hairy ginger arse off and I enjoy it immensely. It certainly isn't (for me) some sort of one-size-fits-all GeneroLARP.

But I guess your mileage might vary...

Having attended every single Maelstrom since event 2, I guess I can claim pretty good mileage. With that in mind: what Joe said, with knobs on. The recent shifts in the appearance of the system, I feel are a valid ic reaction to the changes in the gameworld, and I therefore enjoy them as part of the roleplay experience. Cultural revolutions are interesting to live through, and if they disrupt the 'feel' of the culture, tough noogies. The 'anomalous' aspects (anachronistic/pop culture references etc.) seem to me to be as prevalent as they have been since day one, and are no where near the percentage found in LT. (One day I swear I'll start an LT group of 'continuum police', hunting down and destroying entities that have clearly leaked through from parallel realities).

Just my opinion, but I reckon the 'look' should conform to the evolving gameworld and the characters in it, not the other way around.

Actually, in the Good Old Days, all of this was woodland (well Barneswood and Tolmers, more scrubland at Blackwell).
It's only *now* we have fields!

Fields that are Much Less Muddy, of course. ( And FLAT, dear gawd but I hate Barneswood for all that!! )

I don't worry much about the trees, m'sen, other than to get between my tent and the WIND!.
Turn your back on a Friday and whoosh, a new estate of canvas obscures the view :-)

But I do think LRP is a hobby best enjoyed in a positive state of mind.
If you approach a game with a positive attitude then you're more likely to enjoy yourself there.

Hmmm is was a few years back when i saw the black monks with their mechano cow, that my mind and my characters mind both went "you can do what now!?"
Technology is advancing, well kinda i saw a flamethrower way back, and i feel steampunk is one of the ways it can be represented, but not all advances are steampunk they are just the most flamboyant that have been displayed so far.
Personally i'm still waiting for the first cannons to turn up myself.

The game world is evolving, and players bring there own unique perspective of the game and this to me helps keep the game fresh and interesting. Originally everybody was kind of fixed on the archetypes presented in the game world background. But now players are looking deeper and creating new aspects of the original back story based on the player events that have already taken place.

To put it in historical terms the maelstrom world is sort of in a magical 'Industrial revolution' where advances are being made in all sorts of areas.
