So, from reading this (and other forums) I can deduce that:
Stephen King is crap.
David Gemmel is a Hack
Tolkien's style leave alot to be desired.
Pratchett retells the same story over and over
Dan Brown writes like a 12yr old.
and so on...
so, are there any good authors out there? or do people just like to bitch?

| I tend not to read a great deal of fantasy any more, as most of the authors suck, but I can't praise George R R Martin enough! His Song of Ice and Fire series is fantastic.

Tart (8/25/2006) Dan Brown writes like a 12yr old.
From the genius of Radio 4's 'The Museum of Everything' the other week:-
"The Da Vinci Code isn't real, it's just a badly written novel"
"Ah, that's just what the church WANTS you to think..."

G.R.R.Martin is very good.
I also think Stephen Erikson's 'The malazan book of the fallen' series is really good. I have re-read them a few times. He's a love him or hate him type, but worth a try.

| you might consider Stephen Donaldson The first and second chronicles of Thomas covenant and the gap series are really good. (although I've never read the gap series, I stopped at book two, it was just too depressing for me!)

Julian May is always worth a go if you haven't previously.
George Macdonald Fraser if you can cope with the fact that he may not share modernist politically correct standpoints...
