I've done 24 hour time in in the UK. What it really needs is the right players.

That's the whole thing that made Dragonbane the best larp for me, it had the right players.
I think the most important part was that it was not focused on fighting (Belgian larps focus alot on fighting => attracts alot of munchkins).
The Dragonbane concept would work in Belgium, the UK, ... as long as it has the right players.

Hmm, still doesn't sounds so good from the perspective of immersion, or avoiding 21st century stuff, as Outlore is... the photos kinda back that up, too, I think. Obviously I wasn't *at* DB, so I can't comment on how good an LRP event it was in general. But judging by the reviews, I think that I'd have been disappointed about it not living up to the hype, if I had made it along.

I'd tend to agree with Ian, although obviously I didn't go.

The organisers made a huge thing of stressing strict costume and modern day goods guidelines, how you'd have to live the role.... and finally an animatronic huge dragon.

The reviews suggest that these are, in fact, the areas they failed in...

Modern artefacts and costume were not in fact strictly enforced (they appear to have been enforced ad-hoc) and were broken by the organisers themselves who dressed in modern day kit thus breaking the devotion to complete immersion they promised. They introduced unhidden objects like generators and lighting

though there was a requirment to 'live' as your character they seem happy to provide flares of all things to light a fire

and the 'centre piece' Dragon about which so much fuss was made appears to have been a rather broken fairly immobile construction with a dodgy sound system.

Even worse the whole event had already been delayed by a year to accomodate their prop ideals.

bit... all mouth, no trousers?

Shame really, they promised something rather special, a lot of people were waiting to see how they delivered on this event in order to consider whether attendance of other things run by the organisers was worth the cost. I suspect they've done themselves no favours on the international marketing front.

It sounds as though they made a huge effort, persuaded all their players to make a reasonable effort, and got most of it right. I think thats something to be praised and admired. I was expecting things to go far more wrong than the reports weve had.

But the point remains - they claimed to have this revolutionary approach to LRP, and simply did not deliver it.

I believe they should not have hyped non-finished things so much and of course follow their own strict guidelines.
If they had not said anything about a walking-talking-firebreathing dragon then we would not've expected a walking-talking-firebreathing dragon.
I know that with more people working on the project it would all have been perfect, but that's with most projects. You depend on a lot of volunteers and when your main game area is in the middle of nowhere you can't expect lots of people coming over to help build the village for example.

All in all they achieved alot, but the finishing touches were just never done and sadly that's what alot of people will remember.

I think Dragonbane's problem was the hype perhaps. But if any organiser can point to an ambitious project even close to this scale and honestly claim a lack of problems I'll be amazed.

Perhaps they tried bite off a bit more than they could chew, and didn't quite reach all their aims - they gave it a damned good attempt, and the event was a bloody good one. Especially considering all labour in putting this together was voluntary. I'd love to see the likes of LT pull off anything even close with their volunteer crew base, but it just won't happen.

Well they did deliver something revolutionary in my eyes, their game rules.
Magic was for the witches mostly: if you can roleplay it well you can do it (with a few exceptions).
Also the fact that we could cut trees if we needed extra wood was also cool.
Never was there a moment like: 'just imagine that you are getting water from a well', you actually got the water from the well (at least in Cinderhill). (excluding the generator and the couple of off-game stuff, but in the end the amount of off-game interference was much much much less than in any other larp I went to)

I think that if there never was any dragon then it would've been much better, but that's just my idea.

EDIT: A thing I forgot to mention: the way each culture was set up and defined work really well, even up to the music each culture played was very well done.
Also the way we all repaired our gear in-character was awesome. A couple of player brought IC needles and threads along so we could repair small tears in our clothes at the fire, one player even made a new pair of shoes during the game, that was really awesome.
