Nightwatch

The first in what is a trilogy of films, about the Nightwatch and Daywatch. It's the gritty modern world but with supernaturals running around who police one another with the two watches to make sure neither side becomes too powerful. This first one sees the start of the all powerful one whos choice about good/bad will swing the power balance.

Russian made and showing that America isn't the only place able to do really good effects. The cunning thing about this is that the subtitles are made to be part of the film, so in places they seem to jar and scream or whisper across the screen. See it now before it undoubtably gets refilmed and hollywoodised.

Following on in the foreign movie theme.....

Nikita - Luc Besson at his best. Very stylish and slick thriller

Brotherhood of the Wolf - I want that coat. Watch the sub-titled version. They gave the hero a really wimpy voice in the dubbed one

And also...

Sin City - For sheer guts and glory

The Game - LRP with an unlimited budget

Fight Club - Cos its just cool

Spongebob Squarepants the Movie - Cos it makes me smile

I watched "Inside Man" on the flight yesterday and REALLY enjoyed it. I like Clive Owen as an actor, which probably helps, but it would stand on it's script alone. Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster are both ace, too: Denzel's a hard working cop good-guy, but manages not to be dull, and Jodie is reptillian and brilliant and evil. . . yeah. recommended!

My netflix (the yank equivalent of lovefilm) account is currently full of films that everyone has seen but me (including lots of woody allen movies) which are old but good. it can be fun to take a particular director (Ridley Scott, Woody Allen, Linklater) and watch their stuff in order.
Did I say fun? I meant impossibly anal... and fun !

Cypher: a low-key and stylish technothriller by the guy who made Cube
Cube: Simple thriller with a fantastic group of disparate characters.
Buffalo Soldiers: Faithful adaptation of the book, but with a better ending. About the adventures of a drug dealer on a US army base in cold war Germany.
Atlantis: Cool steampunk movie by Disney. Yes, Disney.
Romper Stomper: Story of a bunch of racist skinheads in Melbourne. Russel Crowe's first leading role. The soundtrack is horribly catchy and the Oi! anthems get stuck in your head all to easily.

PS: What the hell are 'pre-matrix fights'?

Mikey: go rent Vera Drake.
Be prepared to *not* have a giggle-fuelled evening in, and you'll see an excellent, wonderful, beautiful film.

An assortment of superb thrillers:

Collateral
The Salton Sea
Dead Man's Shoes
Spartan
Layer Cake
A History of Violence
Run, Lola, Run
La Haine
The Bourne Identity
Memento
The Boondock Saints

All the above are suitably thought-provoking above and beyond the average thriller, as well as superbly acted.

I recommend 'When the last sword is drawn' as japanese samurai movie about the end of that era, very good and realistic.

Also good for all you kamakurans out there.
