They slight you, you slight them. Sounds like revenge to me.

Your idea of revenge is feeble

Seriously though - I don't see how they slighted me - they just weren't willing to do the local club a favour - it was totally fair enough, we were really surprised by the number of shops who were willing to put up a poster.
Certainly don't see how I'm supposedly slighting them - I'm not doing anything negative to them, I'm not boycotting their shops (I've bought things from GW since), I'm just not going to go out of my way to help them out.

I think my attitude is about whether a business acts as if it's part of a community or not. Some businesses do, and so are willing to do things to help out the hobby in general. Some don't - and that's absolutely fine - but it means they can't really expect the community to help them out when they want it to.

As for beer tokens not the same as cash; Well no, It isn't exactly the same thing but it is still payment of a kind.
As i said, it's up to you to decided if your effort is worth that payment.

OK, I can see what you mean, and yes, beer could be seen as payment.
What I was trying to get across (badly!) was that the amount and type of payment I'd accept isn't just dependent on the effort I put in - it's dependent on who I'm doing the work for - is it a purely professional deal, am I using 'mates rates', is it an exchange of favours, or am I doing it for free.

So, for example, in Manchester there's a shop called FanBoy3 who sell games etc. They're incredibly friendly and helpful, put up posters for local clubs, really go out of their way to help out other roleplayers. So if they were asking for people in costume to help with a promotion in exchange for beers, if I was free I might be up for it.

Revenge is a meal best served cold. So I'm waiting til 2025 to sneak up behind mr. smythe-byette (formally of courtmoor comp school, fleet) and beat him to death with a wooden table leg wrapped with my unfairly marked "Compare and contrast the themes of romeo and juliet with that of henry 5th" essay:

"Iambic fucking pentameter?! Let's see how you like these soft and hard beats, MOTHER FUCKER!!"

*ahem*

I do get what you mean about "mates rates", though I think we are simple arguing the same thing. For me deciding where you work, and for what reasons is all part and parcel of working out if it's worth it.

Though the idea of businesses being part of the community, or merely benefitting from it is an interesting comment. I like that distinction.

True, our arguments do seem to be merely a rizla-thickness apart. I'm just bored. I should really get on with some work

The version they'll be releasing will be version 7 (according to wikipedia)

I'd heard the new release was effectively just a tidying up exercise, incorporating all the errata and changes that have occured since version 6 was first released in 2000, but given the effort GW seem to be putting in, it appears to be another total re-release of everything

Back in my day it was just the one book and a load of cardboard counbters because no one in the world would ever own enough miniatures unless they were somehow King Midas themselves.

Version 7 eh?

They'll undoubtedly make it worse.... like Bloodbowl.

One of the few decent games they had ion recent years was 'man of War' but they stiffed that by producing stupid crap Steam ships and stopped supporting it (mainly AFAIK because everyone bought the realistic ship models and wouldn't touch an expansion)

onto the subject in hand, if your going or want to go, then i dont see any harm in dressing up, but i would not go specifically to dress up and get free beer tokens though imo

there is no harm in dressing up, thats our hobby. The arguments on the list reflect thise in my local group. I'm not one to stand there on my own, as whta might happen. The story of GW not supporting other gamers is not unique. I am told they had a company policy of working against model shops selling their products, giving very little to conventions, and not supporting other hobbies in general.

The larper who made the proposal to us said the manager thought larpers hated figure gamers. So lets prove him wrong, spread the love etc.

It seems, people not anti-Models, just anti-GW. The opinion seems to be its self-inflicted.

I don't have any strong pro- or anti-GW opinions, but I wouldn't volunteer to do this unpaid. My reason is that back when I was involved in Manchester University LRP society, GW were the only RPG or comic shop in central Manchester that refused to put up a poster for a local LRP club I was helping to promote.
