| As it has been said on another forum GW are launching a new Warhammer. A message has gone out asking LRPers to dress up on the launch day. No pay, but beer tokens or something. A debate raged in our group about this being a genuine offer or a rip off from a wealthy company who could pay us. Whats the boards opinion?

I'd want paying... GW are a buch of money grabbing bastards, and therefore should have enough money to pay.
At a guess, the reason they don't want to pay real cash is that then the LRPers involved would be GW employees and would therefore require certain things under employment law.

| Not a chance. I'm incredibly pissed off that once again GW are re-releasing warhammer, which is the only GW product I enjoy these days. Basically they're trying to con larpers into doing GW's dirty work for them for even less than they pay their staff!.

Oh no! A company is releasing a new version of it's product in an attempt to make money. Fuck me, that's news.
If you don't want to spend your hard-earned disposable income on their new game, don't fucking buy it: it's called "consumer choice".
As for dressing up, I can't see anything on the GW website...

This based on the initiative of a local branch manager talking to a larper/figure gamer. The argument in favour was to stop support other forms of the gaming hobby. The counter argument was they caused the hostility by acting against anyone who wasn't GW.
Since we would volunteer, employment law wouldn't be an issue, AFAIK.
At first I thought it would be fun to dress up and over act in front of some kids. But I was never up on the pro/anti GW debate. It would only be fun if, like in larping you are doing with your mates. So I probably wont do it.

So in fact, the story is "One GW manager mentioned to us about dressing up for the launch of the new game, and said he could sort us out with beer tokens".
What a cunt...

I don't have any strong pro- or anti-GW opinions, but I wouldn't volunteer to do this unpaid. My reason is that back when I was involved in Manchester University LRP society, GW were the only RPG or comic shop in central Manchester that refused to put up a poster for a local LRP club I was helping to promote.
Of course, this particular branch of GW might be different.

Ahh, the benefits of petty revenge.
But surely this isn't "Unpaid" if they are offering beer tokens or similar? then it's down to whether you think the renumeration is worth it, surely?

It's not revenge, it's simply that I wouldn't feel like doing a favour for them if they're not going to do favours for any other groups.
For me it would feel like unpaid work. A couple of "beer tokens" isn't the same as pay.
An analogy would be that I'd help out a mate with building a wall / clearing their garden / redecorating their lounge, and expect nothing in return - they'd probably provide food/drinks to say thanks for the help. I wouldn't do the same to help out a local business for the same minimal reward, unless it was a business I was connected with or a business that I felt was putting in effort to support the local community in some way.
