As for accessibility, I have absolutely no idea about history or the classics, and it's not stopping me. I'm going to play a persian king, based off the setting material provided, and I hope it'll be a riot!

You are my favourite person today.

Odyssey team. Someone kind once said I was designing the game experience. Flattery will get him far.

As with all PD matters, such positions are best sought direct from PD through the usual official channels. Accept no substitutes!

Oh, your persian king and my egyptian prince so have to get together. I'm the least informed guy ever! But I plan to have a spangly-ass costume and a damn good time!

You know, 's odd. It's never bothered me before but as I'm thinking about this I'm actually concerned that my bundle of fun character might get in the way of other peoples game. My lack of attention to history could, I guess, be potentially jarring to others. 's not my intention of course, I just plan to have fun.

Actually, never mind. I've convinced myself it'll be fine. I'll be within the culture brief and if if folk are getting annoyed by a lack of historical accuracy, then I figure a game with a historically inspired fantasy setting wasn't the game for them anyway.

*edit*
And sorry to anyone who's actually read this. I don't half ramble, especially in the wee small hours. After some beer.

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

elHombre and Sparks both have 1x Beer Tokens, to be redeemed from me at the first Odyssey event.

This is exactly the approach we are hoping the majority of players will take to the game. Believe me, the story team are going to great lengths to get things historically appropriate to the game* where we can (and where it helps or is appropriate), so leave the worrying about that sort of stuff to us and concentrate on having a good game.

As Matt and Harry have both reiterated - the (literally imminent) rules and setting material should give you everything you need to make a fully informed choice about what to play and where. There's no requirement for a Ph.D in the classics. Relax, stop stressing and just wait for the rules release. It can't be far now...

*You'll note I avoided the word accurate there...

This may get expensive in beer tokens for Mr Andrews...

I applaud that.

Thanks for the replies, I certainly feel assured.  I'll get back to waiting for the official material to be released and pondering where to source costume and props.

In the meantime, I'm revisiting some films for inspiration: Clash of the Titans, Jason and the Argonauts, Alexander, The Mummy/Scorpion King series, Carry on Cleo...

I am a little worried about the accessibility of Odyssey, on an intellectual level.  Many LARPers have quite impressive educational backgrounds, and are... intellectually gifted.  I am not one of them.

*laughs*

Dont worry. Its not any more true of LRP than the rest of society. Theres many LRP'ers who THINK they are intellectually gifted. Most of them are lying.

Yeah, but this is a game where 'philosopher' is a character class.  A character type I'd be very interested in playing for the exploring and unravelling the Mysteries and messing about with the underlying elemental structure of reality for fun and profit side. But I'd be worried about all the philosophers who want to pontificate and debate incessantly about the nature of truth and existence of knowledge and such but just end up getting in my way and limiting the glory of the Pharoah-who-is-Horus.  I may just play the type of philosopher I want, carry around a sharp knife and stab (in a LARP-safe way) anyone who uses the word "epistemology".

Now that is the spirit! Any game where you get stabbed for saying epistemology is a good game in my book. Although how you manage to say that in a larp safe way I don't know...

History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.
