Hyborian Tales IV: In Anticipation of Murderous Blows, 24-26 Sep 2010
"In the midst of that plateau rose a long broad structure of crumbling greenish stone.
"They gazed in wonder. No legends named such a building on any island of Vilayet. They approached it warily, seeing that moss and lichen crawled over the stones, and the broken roof gaped to the sky. On all sides lay bits and shards of masonry, half hidden in the waving grass, giving the impression that once many buildings rose there, perhaps a whole town. But now only the long hall-like structure rose against the sky, and its walls leaned drunkenly among the crawling vines." -- Shadows in the Moonlight, R E Howard
After a couple of years off, we plan to come back with a big event. This one will be open to all, regardless of fitness levels; no 8-hour hikes up and down Welsh mountains here. Rather, we intend to have around 60 player places, divided into 4 more-or-less evenly sized, but differently equipped, factions:
1) Turanian Expedition -- The Turanian Empire needs you to track down the Kozak fugitives who've made their way to this land, escaped slaves & rebels all. Crush them mercilessly. If you see any pirates, they're fair game too. And once you discover the mysterious green-stone city, you should certainly uncover its secrets. Sample character concepts: Turanian noble; Hyrkanian nomad archer; Turanian soldier; priest of Erlik.
2) Kozak Fugitives -- You're escaped slaves & rebels who hate the Turanians with a vengeance. Most of you aren't sailors, so it's no great surprise your ship was wrecked here, so far from sight of other land, in the centre of the Vilayet Sea. You need either a new ship, or safe passage south, outside the reach of the Turanians, or to reach some kind of accommodation with the natives (possibly by wiping them out) so you can stay here... Sample character concepts: Aquilonian princess enslaved for her beauty & status, Cimmerian barbarian trying to forge a fighting force out of the Kozaks, Hyrkanian rebel, venal Zamorian sold into slavery by a rival; or, any character you played in a previous Hyborian Tales game, now rather more raggedy...
3) Pirates of the Crimson Brotherhood -- You're the very dregs of the Turanian empire, including former Kozaks, ex-soldiers, and all sorts. You've never careened on this island before, but it seems a good enough place, now the mists have cleared and you can navigate to it safely. If there's a chance for any loot from that city, or an opportunity to press-gang some Kozaks into the crew, or to singe King Yezdigerd of Turan's beard by slaying some of his soldiers, all the better. Sample character concepts: Dagon-worshipping Yuetshi; Aquilonian ne'er-do-well; pirate captain; Zingaran cut-throat; or, any character you played in a previous Hyborian Tales game, now rather more dodgy...
4) Mysterious Natives -- Your folk have lived here since the Great Fall, when your legends tell of a calamity that befell the green-stone city. Strangers should be sacrificed upon your terrible heathen altars, unless of course they match those Gods From Over The Sea as told in the prophecy... Various suitably mysterious character concepts, probably involving the worship of dark forces.
So, there'll be a PVP element, though we intend to set up some reasons for you to co-operate at least a little, too. There'll be plenty of chances to do mini-adventures (an hour or two at a time) for your group, as well as the possibility of some big fights, dungeons to explore, etc.
Cost is likely to be around £50, uncatered.
Venue is likely to be Wilderness Farm near Wrexham (to be confirmed).

I must admit, the idea of a hardcore event with hiking around the hills while fighting did sound appealing, but I'm still feeling enthused by the sound of this system.
Maelstrom: Blind Harvey, Rimici Capell Future Prospects
Serenity: Sparks, bitter divorcee and mechanic.
Insurrection: A series of short-lived trouble makers.
Odyssey: Ramses, Keeper of the Goats, The Khemenethorus

Depending on how this one goes, it's likely that we'll get back to the traditional 3 x 8-hour hardcore linear, play one, crew two, over the course of a weekend. We've done three events like that before, though, and I know an awful lot of people who said they liked the sound of the thing but didn't feel quite nutty enough to want to do hiking & fighting up & down the mountains in armour (although it honestly seemed, in the past, that the ones who coped best were the older, experienced LRPers with determination & mental fortitude, rather than the younger guys who often claimed to be super-fit! That did vary, though).
