I’ve always been a big fan of zombie movies so when I heard about a zombie larp in Norwich using nerf guns I had to give it a go.

Basically a game of survival horror, players took the roles of hapless employees of an evil corporation (I do mean evil!) that has been conducting experiments using supernatural forces to create super soldiers for a secret government contract. Unfortunately these supernatural forces had taken over (bet no one saw that coming!) reanimating hordes of flesh eating corpses and turning other survivors into kill crazed maniacs! Combat resolution used nerf guns (about later) and larp melee weapons.

The system was very different to other larps I’ve been to in that only 6 or so people played at any one time (of a total of some 70 people) whilst everyone else npc’d. This meant that everyone had a turn against a huge horde of zombies, albeit for a short period of time. The site used was the congregational hall at the UEA (though you didn’t need to attend the UEA to play), in various rooms on both floors of the building. Great set dressing turned the rooms into a morgue armoury etc. There was a lot of enthusiasm among the players most of whom were happy to npc through the night, cover themselves with fake blood and shamble, moan etc very convincingly!

There has been some debate on this forum about the suitability of nerf guns for larp. I found they worked very well at close range indoors, though I doubt they would be very effective outdoors at longer ranges or in windy conditions. The fact that they have limited ammunition capacity and are prone to jamming added to the tension.

Really this was not a “serious larp” there were no opportunities for character development or politicking . Having said that I had an absolute blast fighting through the rooms and corridors in semi darkness against masses of drooling undead! If this sounds appealing then I strongly recommend trying this system. There is a very good comprehensive website that I think is worth checking out for the tarot artwork alone, www.zombielarp.co.uk.

I've been a big fan of Zombie ever since the first one some years back when I was at uni. It is indeed the most immersive experience I have had at a LRP, and has the capacity to make me shake with terror (real terror) for twenty minutes after I have timed-out. In fact, while I do a lot of travelling to get to various games, for this I would go for the highest ratio of travel:uptime - about three and a half hours for 15 minutes. It is extraordinarily win.

Aw, you guys... We do try and keep it completely immersive, simple and terrifying, so it's great to hear that's working well.

Zombie LARP with Nerf guns, you say? On Facebook and Twitter too, you say?
