thirteen7 (12/3/2009) Mate I figured as much and my comment wasn't a dig (apologies if thats how it came across)at all rather I was trying to explain why the three concepts appealed to me in particular. All good!!
The more I think about it the more appealing the Gladiator School idea is... Mmmm
And I didn't mean to imply that you meant...
It's just a commonly-levelled criticism of the game (which is odd in the sense that we've not released very much) so probably a bit of a sore point - and I'm being oversensitive.

I think one of the things that is relatively unusual about Odyssey is that it will have the arena and the battles that take place there as a major attraction. It's easy to look at that and think "well what else is there" because it's such an imposing element of the game that it's dominates the thinking. In fact as Simon says there will be plenty of other stuff as well. But at a fundamental level the game will have all the other stuff you normally find at any LRP event - i.e. plot and stuff. It's just Odyssey will have the arena as well.
History is an important source for LRP. Along with other works of fiction.

Oracles and their supporters/priests/adherents would be interesting - Not only a Greek idea either - I believe that Alexander went to Siwa in Egypt to consult with one. Oh, but that might have been greekish on second thoughts. Either way, crazy brain-damaged priestesses leading belligerent yokels=win!
I will be heading up and Egyptian group, and I certainly hope that oracles will be involved! oracles were a major part of Egyptian temple life, and there were a number of different manifestations of oracular practice. Naturally, the oracles spoke through the priests, which meant the priests could manipulate them to say more or less whatever they wanted - well, this may be true of oracles everywhere come to think of it!
That sounds cool, but if there's no brain-damaged priestessesthen I'm not interested...hang on, that doesn't sound like it did in my head...
Priestesses we have got. Brain damage is not compulsory, but knowing what I do about these particular priestesses, there may well be a degree of that involved!

Cult Of Mithras
Do Mithraism properly. Cultic meals, a tent done up to look like a Mithraeum, strict grading of ranks and really intense rituals & guided meditations. Probably make this an additional affiliation not a main group, andtry to get members among as many Roman groups as possible. Obviously preferentially recruit Champions.
Symposion
Greek Philosophers (possiblyplus Priests?) Meet up every event one evening, have a tent with proper reclinerbenches around the outside, drink lots of wineand eat a good meal together whilst discussing philosophy and/or sex with boys.
Bacchae
A Greek Champion who thinks he's Bacchus Incarnate and his ferocious MaenadChampions. Crazy drinking-stabbing-dancing funtime schenanigans ensue. Everyone would need a stab-safe thyrsus...
Hmm, all three ideas run into the whole Gender Neutral or Male/Female Only question. Do you stick to the historical roots, or embrace the non-sexist Odyssey setting?
All three of these ideas would get a double thumbs up from me. I am a well-known pusher of Mithras from all the way back, and am all for people snapping off a quick tauroctony wherever possible.
In Odyssey, the Bacchae, btw, would be followers of Dionysos (Greek), not Bacchus (Roman). This particular idea has made me go funny in the back of the knees for all sorts of reasons and I strongly endorse it.

Well, I'm planning on trying to get together a greek Dionysian mystery cult. A few priestly types, a few hard-as-nails female maenad/warrior types, and whatever else we can get our hands on.
Some religious politicking, plenty of revels, maybe a big screaming run around the rest of the site, frenzied dancing to drum beats - make our presense well known, and felt by everyone.
I think it could be very fun. Plus, there's the whole mystery religion thing to explore.. I'd love to sort out a group for this, and get some idea's going.

I'm considering an Egyptian tea-house: Arabic style mint or sage tea; cardamom coffee; a samovar; dominoes; philosophy; dates; halva; pistachios etc.. A place to learn stuff, boast, and provoke arena fights. No dogs or Carthaginians.
Hopefully there will be some kind of currency there to make this a possibility.

Steve (1/11/2010) Hopefully there will be some kind of currency there to make this a possibility.
Odyssey is not particularly about trade and it doesn't have a downtime system, so we don't envisage there being a highly detailed economy in the way Maelstrom has one with people buying and selling commodities and investments. However it categorically will have money so this will hopefully work fine.

Great. Frankly, I don't give a toss about trade, or goods - but I think the game will be richer if there are places to scheme, meet, sell stuff and socialise.

I strongly recommend you get a senet set - I'm writing up rules on how our group will be playing it. I can send you a copy when the time comes and tis finished. Senet houses were very popular, and they did serve refreshments.
I like the idea overall
