In the spirit of this sort of thread http://forums.rule7.co.uk/Topic91958-37-1.aspx, let's talk about Awesome Group Concepts. And yes, I know it's hard before we really get any rules and all this might have to be modified. Whatever.

If anyone runs one of these concepts, I'd love to join it...

Cult Of Mithras

Do Mithraism properly. Cultic meals, a tent done up to look like a Mithraeum, strict grading of ranks and really intense rituals & guided meditations. Probably make this an additional affiliation not a main group, and try to get members among as many Roman groups as possible. Obviously preferentially recruit Champions.

Symposion

Greek Philosophers (possibly plus Priests?) Meet up every event one evening, have a tent with proper recliner benches around the outside, drink lots of wine and eat a good meal together whilst discussing philosophy and/or sex with boys.

Bacchae

A Greek Champion who thinks he's Bacchus Incarnate and his ferocious Maenad Champions. Crazy drinking-stabbing-dancing funtime schenanigans ensue. Everyone would need a stab-safe thyrsus...

Hmm, all three ideas run into the whole Gender Neutral or Male/Female Only question. Do you stick to the historical roots, or embrace the non-sexist Odyssey setting?

From my perspective - IC discrimination and elitism is great - it's the idea of OOC discrimination that I think a little tedious and unwelcome in this setting.

Hurrah! I was looking forward to playing a really boorishly sexist Greek, but things were looking distinctly bleak for this idea. Now I feel like this will be acceptable!

How about playing Ionian Greeks - culturally Greek, politically a Persian Satrapi. Constantly trying to gain enough Greek support to throw off the Persian yoke, but at the same time not really interested in adopting new Greek social developments, all while trying to keep the Persian hierarchy sweet.

Also I think that a Spartacist group would be cool (as in 'slave rebellion' before some boor starts going on again) - I reckon that it would work within any culture, though Roman is the obvious one.

Oracles and their supporters/priests/adherents would be interesting - Not only a Greek idea either - I believe that Alexander went to Siwa in Egypt to consult with one. Oh, but that might have been greekish on second thoughts. Either way, crazy brain-damaged priestesses leading belligerent yokels=win!

Argonauts; girlfriend's dad doesn't like you? Sets unreasonable expectations? No problem! Just get a boat and pack it full of the biggest badasses you can find, before sailing endlessly around the Aegean, boffing every bird that doesn't have a scorpions' face that you come across! At least, that's how I remember it...

Yet I have not been seen frequenting the wrestling school intoxicated with success and trying to seduce young boys  ; but I took all my theatrical gear and returned straight home. I pained folk but little and caused them much amusement; my conscience rebuked me for nothing. Hence both grown men and youths should be on my side and I likewise invite the bald to give me their votes; for, if I triumph, everyone will say, both at table and at festivals, “Carry this to the bald man, give these cakes to the bald one, do not grudge the poet whose talent shines as bright as his own bare skull the share he deserves.”

I will be heading up and Egyptian group, and I certainly hope that oracles will be involved! oracles were a major part of Egyptian temple life, and there were a number of different manifestations of oracular practice. Naturally, the oracles spoke through the priests, which meant the priests could manipulate them to say more or less whatever they wanted - well, this may be true of oracles everywhere come to think of it!

That sounds cool, but if there's no brain-damaged priestesses then I'm not interested...hang on, that doesn't sound like it did in my head...

Not really a group concept - but I'd love to see all of the Greek Groups getting together and forming some sort of inter-group Council/Alliance in the same way that the Greeks banded together as 'Greece' for the promotion of a unitary goal, in this case...methinks taking back Atlantis, which OUR gods sunk as Greek soil (and then promptly squabbling about it if we ever do get it back).

I'd be interested in all three of those concepts mainly because they seem to be more about what happens outside the arena as opposed to inside it.

Not that I'm saying I am not going to do any arena fighting but I get slightly concerned whenever games involve something like this as I always worry about what there is to do for people not doing the main plot stuff (in this case the arena fighting... not that I'm saying that arena fighting is the main plot, rather if someone is not involved in it then the game might get a little dull for them) - Hopefully I've explained this OK, if not sorry... language is escaping me today!!

As for concept ideas I had a thought for a Roman group. Basically a group of Gladiator School owners who get together so their slaves can practice combat, while they drink wine, eat and have friendly wagers on the outcome. Needs some further work but the idea might work nicely.

We'll have failed if the arena is all there is to see and do. It will be a big visual part, possibly the biggest, but certainly not the sum total. Along with the rules, the mailshot should include some documentation on 'how Odyssey works' which should cover all this.

Mate I figured as much and my comment wasn't a dig (apologies if thats how it came across) at all rather I was trying to explain why the three concepts appealed to me in particular. All good!!

The more I think about it the more appealing the Gladiator School idea is... Mmmm
