Hi all,
A few questions to help me with some research, to be eventually released as a 'helpful tips for accessorising/researching your character' type doc to the Odyssey playerbase. Obviously, the culture previews already available on the Odyssey site are the primary source, this is more about practical info on how to achieve those ideals. So that I'm clear and to avoid arguments about historical authenticity, I'm aiming for practical advice about clearly signifying national identity. I care not for historical accuracy outside the context of making the nations look distinct and cool. If you have useful links you'd like to share, either post them here or tag them in del.icio.us as odyssey-lrp. Thanks. I will edit/snip/adapt stuff into one main document, hopefully balanced between all 5 nations. So keep it brief please!
(All opinions are my own and are not necessarily shared by the Odyssey game team.)

Quickly identifying props:
You walk into a tent, what's the first thing you see that tells you what nation you are in? My ideas:
Carthage: any variation on the tanit symbol, painted stones or small stylised stone statues, any props from sailing ships (e.g. ropes, wheels, sailing charts)
Egypt: scarab beetle/shpinx ornament, ankh, any model of a god, bows and arrows, mummified cat(!) http://www.ukgiftcompany.co.uk/acatalog/Egyptian-Gifts.html
Greece: the greek key design (or other repeating design) on anything, decorated grecian urns, any typically 'classical' small statues, mosaic patterns
Persia: fans, any painted pottery with typically 'arabic' looking designs, decorated teapots and cups, lion/griffin iconography, decorated lanterns http://www.thebritishmuseum.ac.uk/forgottenempire/luxury/clothing.html
Rome: eagle/wolf/laurel iconography

IC tent sellers:
Links please. I have fbatents and pasttents.

Swearing
Got good IC swears for Odyssey nations? (There is a rule7 thread about swearing somewhere but I'm looking for specific nation-signifying curses.

Stories and myths
Got good links to culturally appropriate stories/myths, that fit in with the premise of the game world? Emphasis on links that will help characters learn/refer to the mythology rather than impenetrable scholarly resources that players will just ignore please? (e.g. Roman myths for kids!)

Science!
That fits in with the game world. Bullet points please.

Any other random customs or 'shared knowledge' for each nation - bullet points please.

Thanks everyone!

Re: tents

Albion canvas has some big tents that might fit a large group of persians

Wikipedia is not bad for myths and legends, certainly for the more well known cultures. I know there's plenty on Greek and Roman on there, but not sure about Carthage

Wikipedia also has some bits on science too.

Specifically I found the following;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uriel's_Machine - An article about a book calle 'Uriel's Machine' which is something of an eclectic investigation into the origins of ancient science. This article as links to other bits and pieces of related note. I read the book ages ago, its.... odd.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_science - Artice about the basics of science with specific reference to Greek and Roman

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:History_of_science - Category listing for History of Science related topics. Of relevence are articles on Greek Mathematics, Islamic science, Roman science, and other interesting titbits.

Just a start.

http://fightmedieval.com - Gettin' Medieval on your ass!

http://www.englishmartialarts.com - Join the Revolution!

Real Life - Dave

Insurrection LRP - Lockwood (Human Slave)
Bladelands - Dionyseus Megacles (Minoan Warrior and Bard. Changeling. Fief Quartermaster)
Tales of the Liberty Syndicate - Sir Edward Henry Montrose (MD, Phd)
The Brass Hand of Dr Martell - Samuel Leonidas Montrose (Stage Magician and Hypnotist)
Stargate - Nicholas Cvjetkovich (Registered Nurse and Team North Medic)
