...so insults which refer to mental disabilities (or whatever we're meant to be calling them this week) are verboten, but insults which refer to the percieved worthlessness of an entire gender and generally cheapen and demean their sexuality are fine?
(personally I'm quite happy for everyone to call each other all kinds of offensive names, but I'd rather that there weren't enormous double standards - equal opportunities mockery and demeaning for all!)

I could start explaining my rationale but I don't want to get sucked into the long drawn out debate that will inevitably occur. @ChessyPig, I'm not really sure what double standards you're talking about. MattJ - I wasn't referring to you, I was referring to the part of kamoba's post where they apologised for using 'retard' as an insult and then went on to use 'twat' as an insult in the same post.
To make things clear, I'm not concerned or complaining about people using any of these things as insults, what I'm pointing out is the bizzare shell game of 'which insult is acceptable to use today and which one needs to be covered up as the group that it refers to is being defended right now' - basically all 'general' insulting terms are insulting because of their relationship to a group which has been marginalised at some point in recent history, and accepting that using one is wrong and requires an apology whilst blithely (and possibly unthinkingly) using another struck me as somewhat disingenuous.

| I thought Kambooka was more removing the word because someone had expressed to be offended by it rather than as a general acceptance that the word should not be used in a derrogatory fashion. A response I thought was quite reasonable and measured. Matt -----------------------
