I need to replace my boots in time for the next maelstrom event, but I'm having difficultly finding a decent pair for a low price (surprisingly ).

I've seen people using boot tops... but only if I've looked closely, which makes me consider them as a cheaper alternative (given I already have durable boots). My only concern is I tend to like stashing things in my boots (nothing much, just a dagger and maybe a very small deringer) and as I haven't had much experience with boot tops I wasn't sure if this would be a problem.

What are people's experiences with boot tops? Good or bad? Can you safely put daggers in them without them falling out or not? Or alternatively can anyone reccomend a place to get decent boots for less than £50, or at least not the >£100 ones I keep finding (I don't care if Jonny Depp your boots in PotC I'm not paying $400 plus shipping! )?

Try getting leg-holsters* for the Deringers, strap these on under the boot tops, sorted

they're not exactly "period", and not neccesarily the comfiest in the world, but I picked up a pair of old army boots from the army surplus store for a tenner. I have to wrap something around my ankles andwear thick socks with them, which means my feet stink fairly quickly in hot weather, but they are cheap and durable, and, while not exactly period, certainly not so far out as to cause ofence to any byut the most anal. And anyway you culd stick furs or whatever to them if you had to! Hell you could build fantastic massive bare feet around them too!

No self respecting anybody would keep a flintlock pistol in their boot top. One its an area likely to get knocked and possibly foul yer weapon. Two... It'll get damp and covered in mud and open the top of the boot and act as a water reservoir...

Have you considered cheap riding boots?  I have a pair of these and they don't look too bad.  OK, they're really just glorified wellies but they're cheap and you know they're going to be waterproof

That site does tend to be rather slow on delivery, though, so order soon if you want them in time for the next event.

I've had a pair of "the original cottage craft riding boot" from Ride-away before now. No grip, but if you're OK with that they're great for LRPing. Less than £40, and delivered quickly

(Edit: you'll have to hunt through the boot section of the site yourself, full link doesn't work coz the session info is screwed up - they're in with the other rubber riding boots)

Those riding boots with the very top bit of boot tops (the flap bit that folds down) attached, would look awesome IMHO.

Have to look into that as I'm currently using para boots & a pair of £6 boot tops off ebay (If I ever get them back off a certain NPC/ crew type person..you know who you are )

I have stashed daggers in boot tops without any problem (can be a little constrictive depending on dagger size and the amount of give in the boot tops though). When I get my boot tops back I intend to add an external sheath to them with a slash in the very top flap to fit the dagger through.

Combat boots and boot tops are the way to go. Especially if you're podially enhanced like me... Nice grip, good support, looks good, perfect. Although no-ones going to care about combat boots on their own, especially if worn with long trousers.

I'd rather see everyone in combat boots, than in nice very IC boots, but have people falling over, twisting their ankles every five minutes.

Plus, try finding nice boots in 12-14 without spending silly money on custom.
