I was at a conference last week and the keynote was on Trajectories of user experience - i.e. designing user experiences in interactive 'theatre'/games. A lot of his points about controlling transitions, expectations, engagements were very relevant to LARP I thought, so will share the papers and links here.

The full keynote paper will hopefully be coming out later on in the proceedings of DRHA 2009 (google it).
A lot of his other papers about spectator experience, collaborative imaginative environments, and blurring game boundaries will also be of interest: http://www.mrl.nott.ac.uk/~sdb/research/research-and-publications.htm

Now I really want to do a PhD!
