I've just created a new character that i would like to play as a secondary for a portion of the next event. How will I actually go about doing that? Can you fill me in on the logistics of it and offer any useful insights. (Bear in mind I have read the rules on secondaries, but I don't feel they really explain everything).
MAELSTROM: Thromm Gildersson-Novak
ODYSSEY: Diogenes of Isthmia
"REAL" LIFE: Owen Choules
"Shiieeettttt!" Because every character needs a catchphrase

From a logistics perspective:
You show up to GOD in your secondary's kit with your primary's body and soul cards and say 'Hi, my CID is XXXX.X. I'd like to play my secondary named Foo now, they are created on the system but don't have a CID assigned yet - they haven't been played before.'
A small quantity of admin faff ensues (basically registering with the database that this character is being played this event, assigning them properly to a group etc) and your secondary's body and soul cards are printed out, laminated and given to you, probably in exchange for your primary's set.
Then you can enter play as your secondary. When you want to change back to your primary, you show up at GOD in your primary's kit with your secondary's body and soul cards, and repeat the process, although the admin faff should be less as the primary is already booked onto the event and has been played and everything.
Maelstrom: Yellow Cap (#include standard not-speaking-for-PD-here disclaimer)
Odyssey: Nepthys, Keeper of the Knives, Khemenethorus
CUTT: Head Ref 09/10
M&M: Princess Cerine, née Faulconer

Important to remember points:
You cannot initiate conflict.
You cannot advance the goals of a primary
You can't be in the same group as your primary.
It is basically a great thing if you want to do something like go and drink in the pub without getting murdered, or (as one flembic lady with ooc massage skills did) work in the chamber of delights without ruining your reputation!

PD doesn't want you to change characters on Friday, so make sure you book on the event as the character you are playing on Friday. If you're already booked as a primary, but you want to play your secondary first email them and they will change it.

Rich (8/17/2009) You can't be in the same group as your primary.
I should point out that as far as I know this is not actually true. The specific wording in Event Rules 3 is:
Secondary characters should have no contact or relationship with the primary character that you play.
Which is actually surprisingly easy to achieve within a group.
I mention this as I played a secondary on regular occasions when my non-human primary became too irritating to continue playing for various reasons. The secondary was a member of the same group but the group structure is deliberately designed to cater for "peripheral" characters that may have little or no contact with the leadership. It works quite well, especially for those of us playing uptight leadership roles; being able to relax and enjoy being Generic Spod #37455 with your friends is quite handy.

secondaries are made of pure win, nothing like spending saturday evening drunk as a.... whaler with a load of other guys with names that rhyme, while everyone else wonders where those holier than holy paladins dissapeared to.
Plus then you get to play the who can get killed the funniest way game

| Also, I believe "not initiating conflict" generally means violence, rather than never getting into an argument. Our secondaries as the puppet-show lot are terribly insulting towards a lot of people (I mean, we've been shot at mid-performance twice so far), but I don't really consider it iniating conflict. Oh, yeah, and best advice is to find something fun IC to do with secondary-earned money, since there's little point to it otherwise. We're fond of tea-houses.

I think it's *any* signficant conflict (i.e. it wouldn't be okay to kick off serious conflicts just because you never touched a sword).

I guess it probably isn't, so long as you don't trigger any conflict beyond that (i.e. you insult someone for being a funnyhead, they shot you in the face and then get hung/beaten to death by some people who didn't like what they did to you).

| Last game when I rolled a secondary on Sat night, I was told I couldn't be involved in 'the main plot', couldn't initiate combat although I could defend myself, and wouldn't start out with any skills or money. And those few hours of drunkenly swanning around camp commenting on hats and harrassing wemics (and almost getting lynched because I called an ophidian a wemic (it was dark) and harrassed her) were the best hours of play I had.

Actually, I was concerned about exactly this situation and emailed PD to check whether us insulting someone which resulted in violence was against the rules (I was concerned about an insultee killing us and then getting 'payback' from our vast legions of fans ). Unfortunately, I have deleted the email it seems but as exactly as I can remember it went like this:
Me: "Does provoking someone to the point of violence count as initiating conflict? [elaborate how it could indirectly lead to violence for them]"
MattP: "No, not even close. [some explanation]"
However, it is a woolly area. I think if we'd actively sought revenge on the guy that shot me then that would be breaking the rules, but if another spectator had decided to start a fight on our behalfs, then there's not a great deal you can do about it. Consider if you were innocently walking along, bumped into someone, they kill you for spilling their pint, then they get tried and executed for it - yeah, you playing that secondary resulting in a PC death but it's not your 'fault'.
One word of caution though - you do have to be very very careful about separating everything your secondary earns/hears/wants from your primary. It requires a lot of discipline (and several pouches for keeping lammies or money separate!)
