Thanks everyone. Its sounding far more sensible an idea than it did at first! Special thanks to Andy Rimmer for the quantity and quality of advice. We have a meeting with the guy from New East Manchester on Monday, so we'll know more then.

As far as Simon at Spearhead - I found something called Spearhead LRP online and emailed them saying I had been pointed there by you guys. I haven't had a response yet. I haven't managed to find Portly Pixie yet (someone's about to post with a link to their website saying it was the first hit on google now aren't they?)

We went a-wandering today and think there are enough points in the local park that we could have encounters that its probably good. My only concern is that several of them are very similar, in terms of shape of the space (maybe five or six meters wide grass with a tar-mac path through the middle of it). There are a few points that are not safe (like on the shores of the reservoir) but not too many. We also found a large open area in the main body of the park (rather than the pathways and bridalpaths nearer us) that might be big enough for a smallish fest lrp, if we could hire the site. The guys in the park office didn't seem too averse to the idea of kids with swords, so we might end up running a fest in the middle of East Manchester at some point! (although that will probably have to wait until next year... Although we already have ideas for something cyberpunk set entirely in virtual reality... but thats another thread and probably for another time - I cenrtainly wouldn;t fel confident running that until I'd run several smaller things first!)

Point of info: you need a new CRB check for each seperate context in which you come into contact with young people, so your wife's check as a teacher will not cover her for this activity. But as Andy says, it is free for volunteers, so you have nothing to lose but your right to privacy. Good luck with the venture

hi

i've been doing that sort of games for the last 3 years as a student job. if i can give you a single advice it would be to get the parents envolved. have a talk with them and let them know who you are and what you're up to, maybe invite them to monster (some of them would jump on the idea of doing something "cool" with their kids), and most important sign them on a release note.

you can keep them as safe as possible but eventually someone will be hurt, it is important to let the kids and the parents that it might happen and that this is a part of the game.

about weapons- i found it safest to use light 80-90 cm long swords, it is controllable and does not allow a direct passing of forces as in daggers. i use the simplest swords i could find (or make), gaffertaped.

have fun

We had that meeting with the guy from New East Manchester yesterday, and it went really well. He thinks its exactly the sort of thing that NEM should have and that he thinks we should be able to get the money for it fairly quickly, and potentialy turn it into a venture that will support us financially eventually (he suggested about three years would be a good time frame). So yay - a life of LRP!

One of the things that impressed him was the enthusiasm we had, and the fact that we could show that it was an idea that had legs already elsewhere, and such a supportive community behind it. So thank you all very much.

We are in the process of building a world and a system that is both interesting enough and simple enough, and will post about that in probably, Scripts and Rules before too long. I have to go away for a few days and will have little better to do than write so hopefully there should be a post up there by the beginning of next week (LT Monster - I meant to say earlier, but I will probably be contacting you for ideas for plot.)

Hi - I run SpearHead and yes we have run several tailored events for young people (typically aged between 10 and 12). Our main events are not suitable for young people and being old hacks our average age at the club is early thirties - we did however recognise the fact that it appears to have become increasingly difficult for young people to get involved in lrp....hence the tailored events.

The events that we have run have thus far always been working in partnership with schools - they then provide the necessary insurance and deal with the hassles of parental consent etc.

The format of the day events has largely been spending the morning teaching the young people how to fight safely through sparring and team games such as trollball. The afternoon is then spent on a three to four hour linear in which all of the young people play and the regular club members crew or npc within the party.

System wise we use a much simplified system from the SpearHead norm - locational hits, everything does single, half a dozen spell effects, cure all healing potions etc

Seems to work well for the young people and hopefully in a few years time they will still be in the hobby....

Nice!  :-) http://mordavia.com/rules.htm Rules are nice, simple and seem to run well.  The best part is that the guy who runs it lives in NZ so you'd be safe from lawyers!  Huzzah!
