I dont think GW will go the way of Airfix but they are really flogging a dead horse wrt LOTR and also seriously pissing off older players by apparently going all "kiddie hammer" again; I played Warhammer for years in the 1990s and then picked it up again at university (2002) since when there have been at least two furhter iterations of the whole game. Its okay gaming with friends when you can game usign whatever rules and minatures you want but official clubs etc...you have to use the current rules models etc. For some of us with Maruader miniatures (yes my collection is THAT old) I cannot use them in my local GW store gaming league as they are a) not citadel b) not current miniatures which is crap. The fact that neither of my armies - Chaos Dwarf and Kislev - are not valid is also a tad annoying.
The main thrust of their business strategy as far as I can see it is to keep updating the games so they can re-sell the entire thing to hobbyists every four years or so if players want to keep upto date and are therefore still customers. With their Role Play books, the reason they ditched them was due to them only being able to sell a player one book and perhaps some tie in books and therefore they are no longer a potential customer, but if they keep on changing the rules, army lists, fgures etc then everyone who plays is still a potential customer...especially when for years there have been hints that they are "bringing back" the Chaos Dwarf army which keeps those players stil expectant and hoping that they can use their old miniautres or extensively converted ones again as Chaos Dwarfs and not just the normal dwarf rules, bit like a carrot and stick I guess and quite a shrewd sales strategy. The fact that are flogging LOTR to death is very evident int he new and nasty "White Dwarf" in which it features quite prominently but isnt terribly popular.
As a former management trainee and games developer with them, I found the whole set up rather too enthusiastic for the hobby and absurb with the hierarchy or at least the names of various positions, e.g. "Sergeant", "Veteran Sergeant" "Comissar" etc for differant management grades or trouble shooters. Not only irrelevant, embarrassing names but ones I would not wish to put on my CV. And also caught somewhere between a joke, LARP and someone trying too hard.
At least the gym at the Nottingham HQ was okay.

I've got a mental image of a cartoon showing you with a pistol drawn saying "Go on then, fail your leadership test!"
Ddin't you buy some jackboots a while back too?

| One thing I don't like about GW is that so many staff are patronising rather than enthusiastic (sometimes it's hard to tell, apparently I can get like that when enthusing) and they always try and ply more goods than an 11 year old can afford =/ Ah, I remember the good old days when Jim used to give me stamps to fill up my little book which would in turn get me free miniatures. And whatever happened to the old open days where you got a cup of tea and a sandwhich ? That was so cool ...
