| I haven't read the books yet (bought them, kids nicked them, then the film was coming out), but I agree the end seemed a little unfinished- I assumed they were saving a big thing for the next movie?

The ending in the book is rather downbeat -- I presume they felt that since it was a kids' movie and there is no guarantee of a sequel unless the 1st one does well, they wanted to end it on a high note. Personally I thought that was fine -- the requirements of a good film differ from those of a good novel.

| One of my dissertation chapters is on the trilogy (how death is represented in kids lit) and I went along to see the film after reading the book...I was quite disappointed that they cut the last part of the book out...but it may have made the film end on a downer which isnt attractive for makers of kids films. I do hope they include it in the start of The Subtle Knife. Apart from that, I loved it, especially the god named McKellen as Iorek He does polar bear so well! ~Emma/FitPiggy
