Hey, I've been roped into finally doing RP-related stuff, and everyone I know is yelling at me to try event LARP. Now, I already do games in the Camarilla, but am a complete novice in terms of the great big outdoorsy events that are apparently so awesome.

So, I guess I'm looking for recommendations on how to start. Can anyone give me advice on what to consider when choosing which system to go for/which events/pricing/kit etc etc? It seems like a looooad of effort, so I'm rather anxious to consider, but having lived with people who enjoyed LT and the like, I'm just looking for advice on a starting point.

Thanks

By event Larp and mention of LT I presuming that your refering to large festival style games rather than smaller group based ones.

Frankly the three Big festival games are LT, CP, and Maelstrom (PD), all of which have boards on this site and enough Fanboys there to try and sell them to you.

[Plug] For Maelstrom, visit http://www.profounddecisions.co.uk/ for a free infomation pack, which should contain lots of info about the game, copy of the rules etc. [/plug]

Though if you have friends that are already attending an event this year, you could do worse then perhaps go with them.

Kit wise, girls tend to get it a bit easier than us blokes, with many high street stores selling many easily 'kittable' items. Once you have a clear idea of the kind of game you want to play and the type of character your going to be playing, have a browse around your local stores and Im sure at least one or two things will jump out on you. For anything else, feel free to ask on the 'The Method' board, or take a look at the vendors who advertise on the 'Trader's Bazaar'.

If it's your first event and your not sure your going to like it, I wouldn't worry too much about getting 100% perfect kit, just go with what's easiest & cheepest for you, while not looking too out of place for the style of game your playing. A good tip here is to blackmail your other LRP friends into lending you some.

Camping equipment: If your having to camp for the first time, aim for a summer event as there usually warmer. A cheap tent will tend to cost you between £30-£80*. A sleeping bag and bed roll are a must. If you drive, pack as much as you think you're need, if you can't drive, pack as much as you know you can carry. Food is usually available at all of the larger fests, but I can't garentee you'll like the look of it .

*If your not a great camper, lookout for some of the new pop up tents, no faffing around with them, just the time it take to bang the pegs in.

Have you ever tried putting one of those things away. Jeez me and my mate almost threw it in a skip. Fold point A to point B, twist to C then stand on one leg....etc

But to be helpful, as has been said go with some mates. Scrounge their stuff. Have fun.

Andy: I'm in Newcastle, so anywhere in the North of England I'd consider...

Luka: I'm more inclined to do Maelstrom rather than LT as I have somewhat rubbish experience of someone who like to completely trash it, but all three of those sound good from the opinions of trustworthy friends. Thanks for the links

Shelford: I have friends who do either one or all of those systems, so hopefully they'll donate things to my fund of needing LARP kit :p Thanks!

Durham University Treasure Trap (DUTT) is one of the biggest and most active clubs about - we run 2 events (3 if you count the OOC weapons pratice) every week during the university term (you don't have to come to all of them to enjoy it!). Incidendally, we're also the longest continually running LARP in the world - we celebrated our 25th anniversary in January this year. Our website is here.

We're currently knocked off for the exams - events restart in June, run for a couple of weeks and then it's summer. The best time to join us is the start of October when we get the new Fresher intake and you won't be a lone newbie. It's always nice to see new faces - we're a very friendly bunch. We take both students and non-students alike - we make no distinction, and currently we're about 75% students to 25% "externals". Events are very cheap - £1 a pop for Tavern Nights and free to crew linears, £4 if you character. Your first few events will be free if you are new, anyhow.

We have and maintain a large armoury of kit, armour and weapons that we lend out to people who don't have their own, so don't worry about that - have a read of the Intro/FAQ on the site and it'll clear things up for you. The only thing I should point out is that we don't allow anyone under 16 because of our insurance, though you might want to check that with the President rather than taking my word for it.

Marios was a DUTTer a long time ago (when he was an undergrad), and still counts as one of our "external" members, though he rarely turns up as he lives down south. If you want more info on what DUTT is like now, feel free to PM me, or get in contact with the exec via the emails on the website.

Quick summary: DUTT is a low-ish fantasy mediaeval system, player-led, and both politics-heavy and/or combat heavy depending on what you want to do. Personally, I enjoy playing both the politics game and the beating on things game.

As I said - it's always nice to see new people, especially more North East LARPers.

I was going to run for parliament, because I want to make the world a better place, but I ran into some old friends and went out for a beer instead.

Hi! Welcome to the boards

As others have said, a good place to start is with your friends. Even if the game they go to doesn't sound entirely your cup of tea, it's much easier to start surrounded by people that you know and trust. Large events can be quite off-putting on your own, as it can be quite un-nerving to be camping in a field with a bunch of strangers.
Saying that, I managed my first CP event entirely on my own, and made a lot of new friends very quickly. It depends on how outgoing you are, and if you are the sort of person who likes meeting strange new people.

Another good place to start is by visiting the internet forums for the games, and posting messages there. Lots of players will be eager to tell you what is good about those games, and even better there are usually groups and factions who would like new players to join them. Have a look at this thread: here
It's a list of Maelstrom groups looking for new members, and has lots of people who'll be willing to show you the ropes and introduce you to the game as part of their group.

Although you seem to be interested in the large fantasy fest events, it might be worth your while looking at some smaller sci-fi games, such as Riftworld or Serenity (boards are here and here) because fantasy can seem a bit silly after modern day games like the Camarilla, so I have found that I personally prefer sci-fi.

Large events are a lot of fun though, and there's nothing like being in a field with a thousand people who are all as crazy as you are. Good luck, and let us know how you get on

Not psychopath, psychopomp.
