I've had a look at the forums but I can't find any details about how the change of magic affects the game world - is magic still frowned upon by most churches and several secret societies? Are some countries more tolerant of it than others, or do all use it equally? Do shidhe still exist, and does anyone know/care/theorise where magic comes from? I can see why you chose not to go with the RPG's kind of magic, I'm just trying to work out how that will effect the game world because so much of the RPG's background comes into effect because of the social implications of magic.

Thanks for checking out the forums, to be honest the majority of our current players have never played the tabletop version and therefore do not view it as 'changed'. The change of magic should have little effect of the game world, all indiviuals are free to choose there own prejudices and opinions, whether the country / religion / secret society you come from effects these requires the player to find out what these views are by way of researching their history and then act out these views. The country we play in for the majority of our games is Avalon and is accepting of most forms of magic or religious views. Countries are not all as accepting, Castille (due to the Vaticine Church) for examaple, as with the tabletop version, is extremly Anti magic to the point of hostility.

The Sidhe do indeed exist and feature in the games that we play in Avalon, the players have met and in some cases had to defend themselves from a selection of lower class Sidhe and will tell you their encounters with 2 particular noble Sidhe, the game team take a lot of inspiration from English folk law and this is evident when we play the Sidhe. Although they occasionally turn up in game they are more a background feature providing plot and interest.

What actually happens at an event is very much determind by the players and how much they choose to put into it, currently no-one knows/cares/theorises where magic comes from? Would you like to play a character who thinks they know /cares/theorises where magic comes from?

The social implications of magic have yet to be completely explored, we have only been running 18 months (6 events). 7th Sea is partially freeform and responsibility for opinions and social views lies with the player. The more you find out about your choosen background the more lifelike your character. My best advice is to come and play, see what happens, assume that all social stereotypes are true until proven otherwise by someone. For example - if your character assumes all Castillians are religious nutcases who hate magic, your character should act this out until he or she meets someone who challenges their assumptions about Castillians. Human indivduallity is much more complex than anything in the book, but it is safe for a player to choose any of the assumtions listed for their character to believe or discard any assumptions they wish too.

NEW VENUE!

7th sea will be holding its summer event this year in Wiltshire...

The Explorers Guild are holding a recruitment weekend at one of their halls. Each of the players has been nominated (by person or persons unknown) to join but full membership depends on their completing of selection. The weekend to be held on the 25th July is a chance to prove yourself as worthy to call yourself an explorer!

We would love to see some new players... feel free to check out the forums or contact me.
