Anyone know a decent but temporary way of colouring hair (and beard) to a silver grey/white, essentially to age a person ?

There are several ways to do this.   You can buy coloured hairspray such as Hair Flare in either white or silver.  You do tend to need quite a lot of it to cover a whole head, and it does tend to give a sticky finish that makes the hair impossible to comb and a bit grotty looking.  You can also use airbrush makeup to do this, again expect it to be sticky, and don't try to comb your hair until you've washed it a couple of times.

If you're blonde, you can use 'wash-in, wash-out' colours in either silver or white to achieve a similar effect, without the grotty stickiness.  However, on blonde hair the effects can last longer than advertised, so you may need to buy proper hair dye to cover up the grey if it all goes wrong.  I've never managed to make light wash in and out colour work on brunette hair, but other people may be luckier.

Some people swear by powdering hair, the old eighteenth century way.  I find this itches like crazy and causes trouble for asthmatics, although the overall effect looks better than Hair Flare.   By far the easiest way I deal with 'old' hair is to get a wig, or to wear a big hat or head scarf.

I find if you use the white spray-on stuff it look OK up close, but it shows up really weird on photos. I have taken to using grey snazzaroo face paint. (If you haven't got grey, use black and put white over it). The older you want to be, the lighter the makeup you use.

If you have long hair, there are two methods of applying it.

1. If your hair is put back, e.g. in a bun or plait, lightly brush the makeup over the hair with a sponge. Don't make it too wet (but also if using white don't make it too dry or it clogs and you get really bright streaks).

2. If your hair is loose, make the makeup really wet and 'comb' it through your hair with your fingers. This has the added effect of making the hair lank and lifeless, simulating the damage caused to hair by ageing.

If you've got short hair, use whichever method best suits the style - for spikey I suggest method 2, really short method 1.

I think you can't beat powder for this. Yes, you need to wash it a couple of times afterwards (and not breathe in while you're powdering) but it's the only way to avoid looking as though you're wearing gel (and rather like the ghost of David Beckham). Particularly effective for powdering around the temples and streaking through a beard, but it does work for whole-head effects too.

Hair is reflective and metallic, You can dry brush white or grey against the hairs that looks great (use water based paint) If you want the stuff they use on TV its called age hair by a company called BEN NYE its a metallic colour suspended in alcohol that when applied greys the hair and keeps that metallic look.
