Right. I have some lovely new tabi boots for my character. They have an inch high sole that is rubber and looks pretty waterproof but frankly, I don't want to wait until I'm knee deep in mud to find that out. Is there a good product to seal the seams and also waterproof the canvas of the shoes?

I've used 'Aqua-Seal' on tent canvas, that works pretty well, the tent can breathe and it doesn't stiffen it up like some things do.
Don't know if that will work with canvas shoes though

It'll make them rain proof but probably not great-big-muddy-puddle proof.
ETA; Whatever you use, make sure it's not silicon based as this may make them less waterproof, not more, depending on the canvas. Oil-based is best for canvas. Soybean oil mixed with turps can work well.

go buy some canvas and experiment.... you may want to try a wax made by a company called nikwax go to your millets/blacks or maybe an army surplus store..

For all the money you are gonna spend mucking about with trying to water proof them I'd suggest just buying some Gortex socks. You can pick them up for about a tenner as army surplus places. Just accept that those things are gonna get wet, but your socks will keep your feet nice and dry. Have wet shoes, dry socks.

I hate to be picky (what am I saying?!? I love to be picky), but I'd recommend paying a bit more and getting Sealskinz socks, rather than Goretex ones. They're comfier, and more genuinely waterproof.

| Erm... tabi? Were talking cotton footwear with buttons (hooks, actually) down the shaft all the way down to the sole? You might as well try waterproofing sandals. In case we`re talking stretchy cotton (don`t think I`ve ever seen those with rubber soles) I don`t think they waterproof all that well either. For mud-wading you use geta. Let`s face it, tabi are socks. They`re for indoors. The rubber-sole variety is nice for working on scaffoldings. They were never intended for walking on the road, much less a muddy forest path. The plus points are: you`re less likely to step out of them when they do get stuck in the mud, and they dry considerably faster than leather shoes. Wearing no socks at all may be your best option (unless they`re oversized). Other than that: having some other footwear you can change into when you`re not 'on a mission' would be sensible, or only wearing them in very nice weather.

Nope. Not socks. Canvas tabi style boots would be a more accurate word for them and I've seen them called Ninja boots, which made me giggle. They have the same toe divider thing as tabi socks, at any rate, but you can't wear geta with them on account of the rubber sole.

They are slightly padded and lined with cotton, and a definate improvement warm feet wise on my school-gym-kit plimpsolls which looked ok but were about as good for keeping dry as wearing muffins on my feet.
I have a lovely pair of laquered geta. I can't really walk in them, frankly, so they only come out when I don't have to do much going anywhere.
