I was under the impression that 'sci-fi' was shorthand for 'science fiction.' I'm not going to argue about usage within a specific community, but among the wider community thats how its used in myu experience. Not patronising at all, but I'm not going to abandon a shortening because some people dont like it.

Fair enough, and I completely take your point,  I'm afraid I don't have that luxury, but I did need you to understand where I was coming from.

I was under the impression that 'science fiction' was specifically fiction wherein the plot centred around new technology and how this affects people and society. So His Dark Materials could be considered science fiction becausde it is about new technology which allows humans to see 'Dust' and travel between worlds, and how this brings everything crashing down, but Star Wars is Fantasy (or speculative fiction if you prefer) in Space because the technology isn't particularly relevant to the storyline and you could tell the same story with swords and boats.

We could have a genre debate all day on this. Novums are technological tools that forward the plot, so yes in what you are saying you would be correct, but portals are usually fantasy devices and the use of wonder in literature is usually a fantasy device, therefore IMHO Pullman falls into the middle. However Hard SF critics would argue that it falls short of being SF owing to the unreality of its premise and would call it a fantasy work. Orson Scott Card gives some great definitions of how to work it all out in his book on Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I'm aware that its not remotely the scope of the fantasy genre, but I have come across a wide variety of tolkein-esque fantasy LRP games and not many non tolkein-esque fantasy games - and so when somebody says 'fantasy LRP' thats what i think.

Interesting, I wouldn't call Maelstrom, Nyctophobia, Odyssey or the premise of Refuge that tolkienesque.

Fair point. It'd be much cooler if it was steampunk fantasy though.

Perjorative terminology is always in the eye of the beholder. Sorry, that joke's for Marios...

If you were looking for different ideas, you might try taking a look at Chiana Mieville's writing, or Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast.

I'm sure we could discuss definitions of genres all day, and whilst it would no doubt be interesting I doubt it would add much to the discussion.

The only one of those games I'm familiar with is Maelstrom, and whenever anybody has 'sold' it to me its been described as 'flintlock and fantasy' - possibly because of the association with the term fantasy LRP and tolkein-esque games. I'm not saying in any way there are no other styles of fantasy LRP out there - its just thats the connotations the term has for me. Call it a memetic curse if you will!

'Flintlock and Fantasy', is really named such because, well, it mirrors 'Sword and Sorcery'. It sounds cool, but shouldn't be limiting the sub-genre to being a purely Fantasy game, or to just using Flintlocks (naturally).
