My last 'wanted' post was very successful, I've found a helm. So I thought I'd post my other armour dilemma here as well.

I want new mail. There's nothing particularly wrong with my current suit, its just too damned heavy. I dont want to *make* mail myself this time (no time), so, here's the question - does anyone know where I can find a mail shirt that isnt a-stupidly heavy, and b-designed for a six foot bloke?

I'm 5 foot 2, and although I'm not of slender build, nor am I huge.

Your best bet would be finding one of the ebay-traders selling mail and asking them to do it custom. Since it's all hand made anyway its likely to not be that much more expensive, if at all. Some of them do kid's size chain mail (reasons for which are beyond me) so I'd have thought they'd be able to.

Edited to add: Is the problem with your current suit the kind of links or that its designed for womebody much larger? If its the latter you should be able to get it adjusted without too much difficulty

My current mail was designed for me, a friend and I made it after we'd made his! The problem is that the links are too heavy

Ah. That'll be aluminium then, yes?

Two minutes with google turned up:

http://www.darkbladeuk.co.uk/prodtype.asp?cookiecheck=yes&strPageHistory=cat&PT_ID=73
http://www.armchair-armoury.co.uk/chainmail.htm

The armchair armouries ones cost more, but the guy will make them to measure. The others will probably be massive on you, but the weight is miniscule (for metal armour), and with a belt you should be fine. If they're too long you can always use tin-snips to take the bottom off.

Clearly your google-fu is better than mine, the only one I could find was medieval arms.

I want mail that looks good, aluminium can sometimes be too shiny. My current suit weighs about a stone and a half!

I have worn various large suits over the years, and wearing a tight belt over too large mail doesnt actually work as it bunches it up round the waist, which is very uncomfortable.

To be honest, a stone and a half is pretty light already. I think you'll have to go aluminium for lighter. I can see one in titanium:

but it's heavier than your current. Maybe the answer is aluminium and some sort of paint or varnish? A quick going over with dull silver spray paint might sort it out.

A stone and a half is light when you're the big bloke who weighs more, but not when you're the 5 foot 2 female. The othe suit we made from the same links weighs a lot more as its bigger.

Plans are afoot with the aluminium. If they come to fruition, the new suit will weigh less than half the current.
