What would you want from the ref side of an online downtime system? Initial ideas I have are:
- downtime start/end date management
- display of character and player name every time a downtime is viewed
- summary display of all downtimes indicating which are answered and which aren't.
- detailed display of submitted downtimes.
- ability to add/view private comments (that players don't see) about the downtime and/or character
- ability to view previous downtimes for a character
- ability to add the response to this downtime.
- ability to send out finished downtimes (by email)
- ability to view print-friendly versions of finished downtimes.
- ability to manually enter downtimes that haven't been submitted through the player portal (e.g. arrived by post)
Any more? Anyone with any feedback on systems they have used?
Please indicate in your responses what experience you have as a downtime handling ref. (While I don't want to discourage people from pointing out what they think may be useful to refs while handling downtimes those people who have experience of actually doing the job have a little more weight in such discussions. For the record I have never been a downtime-handling ref, and the above list is mainly guesswork.)

| I think all of that sounds great. One thing I think a downtime system online really needs to have is the ability for the ref to see all the info he needs in one place. So, you have the window in wihch you are writing the return and next to it you have the window with the player's downtime and somewhere else you have a window of the character details. This means you can do the job with the minimum of flipping between files. Keeping track of long term projects is also a good thing, I think, with the option for the ref to add in bonuses for particular skill or other attributes. So, for example, Bob the necromancer is building a graveyard and this will take 18 months of downtime. However, the ref can add in mods to this based on his skills and so on. So, having a contact on the local council planning department office reduces the time by 5%, throwing more money at the builders so they do a quicker job reduces it by a further 10% and so on.
