Not in the UK though... don't be stupid.

I'm sure that most of you are familiar with Nemi in the Metro. Well she originally hails from Norway and in last Sunday's Dagbladet there was a Nemi strip wholly based around a group roleplaying, now admitedly it did feature that classic cliche of a girl (Nemi) ruining a TT session by being ditzy but I can't imagine that the Metro will print it or that any other British newspaper would have a strip based around roleplying.

Or am I wrong? Has roleplaying got a much larger public understanding than I am imagining?

I find that most people that I have to explain what we're doing running around in a field with swords tend to understand 'It's a roleplaying game, you know, like Dungeons and Dragons except we dress up and act it out'. I only include the bit about Dungeons and Dragons if they're looking blank at 'roleplaying'. So there is some widespread public understanding of roleplaying at a superficial level - the existance of the concept is part of almost everyone's general knowledge.

I've always loved the discription:

'Its kind of like cross-country pantomime'

I normally go with "Its a bit like a Murder Mystery evening, but with a Lord of the Rings theme". I try and steer clear of mentioning D&D

LRP does occassionally crop up in mainstream media. The Guardian did a reasonable cover story on Oblivion, and I think it was the times that covered Spearhead.

We got in the Derby Evening Telegraph (Student Vampire Horror: Drama as bloody ghouls haunt pubs)

Never seen it in comic strips before tho (except for things like Penny Arcade). The more (good) exposure we get the better though

You guys use that too?

Being the one in the yellow jacket, I pretty much try to field all the questions from random muggles out for a walk. It's one of our standard lines.

Somewhat surprisingly, I've found that a lot of people are much more accepting of LARP than pen 'n' paper roleplaying. Obviously sitting at a table, rolling dice and pretending to be an elf is for nerds and losers, but running around a field, hitting people and pretending to be an elf is cool.

'Kind of like re-enactment, but in a different world' is one I use, and the cross-country pantomime...

I currently have someone thinking that we're performers and keeps thinking you can watch us... Erm... Thing is, the plot at Mael really only makes sense if you're in it half the time...

Tho' I do have a cool boss at my temporary (mutter) work who knows what LARP is, knows what RP is and is an ex-goth... SO much easier to explain you need friday off when the person understands why and you don't have to do tortured mangled explanations...

It's true.

Can't argue with that.
