Now for one reason or another was thinking about how to implement a game mechanic for flintlocks that gives a random hit or miss. I had a kind of flash of inspiration whilst riding my bike and here it is:

Everybody has a six digit number that they can easily reel off and that’s their date of birth in the dd-mm-yy format. So it works like this:

  1. Fire at someone and shout the first digit of your DOB.
  2. The target recalls their first digit of their DOB. If the 1st digit of their DOB is the same or higher they shout miss if it’s lower they take a hit and react accordingly.

Take zeros as ten. Then continue just cycling through your DOB as you fire/take hits. Don’t know if I’ve explained it right but that’s the basic idea. So what do you all think, is it a silly idea or not?

Silly idea.

Favours people born on the 30th of September in the first year of a recent decade (30-09-90); disfavours people born on the eleventh of November in the second year of a long-ago decade (11-11-11). In fact, in that example, the good date beats the bad one in every possible combination.

Easy to forget where you are in the sequence if you're in a fight then a few hours pass.

Easy to cheat.

How about just making people use organiser-issued caps, half of which are duds?

I've heard of similar systems applied to P&C magic, In theory the only downsides I can see to it are a). somepeople will find the use of calls breaks there suspension of disbelife, b).People born on the 09/09/79, are going to be very accurate shots.

As an extention, you could start everyone on a random number 10-1 and then have them cycle through them (3,2,1,10,9,8). More accurate characters could then be allowed to either have a minimum count (5,4,3,3,3,10), or to cycle back to 10 on a higher number. (5,4,3,10,9,8).

Yeah well some DOB are gonna be better than others. It’s gonna happen.

Well players would be aloud to restart after a fight.
Easy to cheat.
Well this mechanic was intended for a small group of friends, plus if someone wants to cheat they will no matter what the game mechanic.

That’s one I have heard used and is probably simpler and easier. The random DOB one was just something that came to me and I thought I’d share.

Ick -

In a point and click game you are going to have to shout out who the target is in most situations anyway, not all but most.

That's what I said. You seem to be implying that it doesn't matter much.
If I were shooting at someone and had no chance at all of hitting that person, because of birth dates, I'd be unhappy about it. Someone born on 09-09-90 will be immune to an awful lot of people.

In a big fest kind of game, sure people would be peeved that because of their DOB they are disadvantaged but in a game based on Space 1799 for a small player base of mates it wouldn’t be a huge problem. The 09-09-90 player would have a huge advantage but that’s just the luck of the draw. So your starting stats are random, it depends on when you where born, a random number. I suppose it depends on your outlook. Players have gotten used to starting games on a level playing field with the same amount of points to spend so that players all have the same ‘chance’ at the start of the game. With this system some are stronger/faster/better shots than others. So yeah it is unfair but hey that’s life.

How about:

If both numbers add up to an odd number, it`s a hit, if they add up to an even number, it`s a miss.
