So, thats it, one year on, and I swear that Rule7 is responsible for the development of my first gray hairs, still... nevermind we're here and things am a changing for the better. (What's great is that Allen has no clue until he reads this). No birthday is complete without a birthday present, and given forums want for very little, it seems that the users that make up the populace of that forum should be the target of such things.
So i've just got off the phone with a nice American chap, who generously relieved me of the national debt of a third world country, in return for a brand spanking new server for Rule7. Those of you quick on the uptake will realise, we're moving, and we're moving Stateside. Rule7 has performed exceptionally well and grown at a totally unexpected rate. Oweing to this we need to upgrade. The US is the only place we can reasonably afford this, I've already spent the last week extensively testing with the new host, and can tell you that the speed is better than we receive currently, even from the US.
We're over trebbling our disk space, doubling our bandwidth, and providing an additional 50% RAM on top of what we're existingly using which will resolve all those little niggly things that happen which leads to a slow down or the occasional total server crash.
So, techie bit out the way, what does this mean for you, the Rule7 User? It means the following:
A Brand spanking new install of our Forum software, customised and optimised especially for Rule7. It should run slightly faster, cleaner, and have less problems.
We will be enabling Avatars and User pictures for all users free of charge. The space given per user to store these will be modest, but sufficient for at least one of each per user. Those more astute enough to compress and rescale images, will obviously get lots more.
We will be increasing the number of PM's each user can store, to somewhere in the region of 50. We realise this has been a thorn in many a users side, and we'd like to alleviate that.
I will be fully switching on Polls, you can poll away to your heart's content.
All this, and the cost to the user? Approximately one weekends downtime sometime in the near future. The weekends are actuallly our quietest period and this is the best time to do it. We will let you know closer to the time when this is, if possible. IT MAY BE THIS COMING WEEKEND!!!! If this is the case, a holding page will be up, please bare with us in such a case.
Finally, I'm sure Allen will have something to say about my generous mood, bah! Humbug, and don't say I never give you anything, don't expect a christmas present.
Best Wishes and all that.
