nesciomancer (7/28/2006) I'm not an expert on stats issues, but the question that springs to my mind when I read this is: what do you do if people start sharing information about how long it takes to learn stuff?
E.g., Bob tells Dave ICthat he's thinking about learning how to use a sword, Dave responds "well, we find that if you really put your mind to it and don't get too distracted, it's about as easy to learn as two minor flangespells."
In that example the information transfer is all totally IC, but a lot of people probably wouldn't see anything wrong with sharing the information OOC either.
I think a good solution for this problem would to have the ref in charge of the player's xp and skills and watch how much he does things which would compliment learning the skill, eg; A player who fights with a sword whilst learning fencing. Then the ref can decide how fast or slow the player learns the skill.

| Loads of questions.... well here goes You can concentrate in that skills may actually cost more than 1 xp and you can put more than one xp into learning them In real life people learn lots of things at the same time. You're at work and learn more stuff on web-design or whatever your job is, maybe go to the gym afterwards you come home and watch a history program, then cook, maybe read a bit before bed. Hence you've training web-design, driving maybe, increased strength, trained in history, trained in cooking, and literacy People do learn better if they concentrate on one thing, hence how people are allowed to put more points into one area. However, no-one can feasibly spend 16 hours a day studying Astronomy and nothing else, or lifting wieghts. There are limits to what the mind can absorb and the body can cope with. Rest is required so people do other stuff in that time. Some people pick up stuff a lot faster than others, I'm utterly out of shape so would have a much harder time training in fencing than someone who was fit. Therefore its going to take me 5 months to get to the same stage as they might be in a month There could be situations where people learn 3 or 4 basic skills in a month but will take 5 months to learn the basics of another. I'm 100% sure that I would find picking up "intelligence based" skills considerably quicker than strength based skills. I can bench press about 50kgs last time I checked. To get my arm muscles to the stage where I could bench press 100kgs would take 6 months. During which time I might have learnt the basics of botany, cryptozoology, principles of winemaking and the history of Brittany simply cos I'm more "attuned" to learning than training Players could potentially get to the situation where they have lots of unspent xp, merely cos they're concentrating on stuff that's not their speciality, so they're acquiring it faster than they can spend it. The games are probably going to be monthly and the players will earn an amount which hasn't yet been determined. They won't know how much they've earned

I agree with the general consensus above that hidden mechanics are usually revealed or information shared by players relatively quickly.
It's really tricky when looking at something like that to make it fair, as it becomes down to subjective interpretation. One person will become angry that they can't learn swordsmanship in an intensive month, another will be astonished they achieved it in six months because both have different ideas in their mind of what's involved and what they are getting.
Any system that says something like "learn to be good with sword costs 3xp" is essentially putting a mechanic in place in order to be fair between players over rate of advancement and power levels. It's then surely up to the player to interpret the IC side of what "actually happened to their character"? If Targ and Zib both spend their 3xp, and Targ decides it's a natural aptitude which took him and afternoon, while Zib decides it took him a year in sword academy night classes, then fine... It's an OOC mechanism for an IC result.
After all, aren't we trying to let the players have control over what they play, so long as it's reasonably fair in comparison with other players? Surely that is more fun?

In real life the PC's of targ and zib will have there own skill level it could confuse things. If even if zib took night classes for a year, he may be able to hand targs ass to him every time cos hes so good. Then the whole mechanic would just look silly.
