Okay, I'm crazy. But I have been playing musical LRP characters for several years now, and I always have to stop singing when the fighting starts! I long for a larp-safe guitar that's also functional.

I think it's possible, in theory. It could be built around, or in a similar style to, some 'travel' guitars, with a small resonating box. The guitar body shape could be built up out of foam. The two major problems I can see are making the fretboard both safe and functional (it's got to have metal frets in order for the strings to sound) and avoiding the foam covering deadening the entire sound, given it'll have to surround the resonator.

Is this even faintly possible, or should I give up my dream? What do you guys think?

I dont imagine it would pass a weapons check, sounds like the back would be safe but the front with strings and metal would not be.

A non-playable one I think would be entirely feasible.

Why not make two, both identical ones, just one that plays, and one to hit people with. Just switch them when the action starts!

Re - deadening the sound - The only thing I can think of is putting a pick-up in the box, and using a small amp, otherwise you're running the risk of it splitting through the foam.

In similar thoughts, I *still* would love a larpsafe pipe, replica to one of the wooden fifes that Jig plays, except I haven't worked out whether it's cored or thrown weapon. Still, it would be something I could keep in his pipe bag and pull out to play as I see action starting.

I've made LRP instuments before-pipes are easy just use a plastic penny whistle and foam cover it then decorate as required, All the string instuments were fake-in that they had speakers built into them, a Harp, a Mandolin and a Balilika- you could probably do something with an Ipod (instead of the walkman we used).

I'd be happy to attempt to build a real instrument -but couldn't promise it'll pass every systems weapon checks.

I've made a LARP throw-safe mandolin (stupid in that I don't play mandolin) entirely out of foam but there's absolutely no way I'd be happy being hit with anything that had wires/strings sticking out of the end or machine heads, so I very much doubt you could make it work. I've seen a foam-covered penny whistle too and it was in no way larp safe (also very hard to play). No reason not to give it a go, but I suspect you'll end up with something that's no good as either an instrument or a LARP weapon. I'd just make one to match your guitar and swap them over.

Now, I just need enough foam for an accordion...

Thanks for all this, people. I guess I will have to explore non-functional options :/
