Looking to make a few pieces of kit, specifically a full borg suit and some decent powered armour. Don't have the facilities or money to mess around with vacforming, and various Starwars costuming sites put me on to this stuff.

Sintra, also known as closed-cell, expanded plastic, high-density PVC sheet.

Kinda the midway between acrylic and foam board, can be easily glued, cut and shaped, plus you can shape and form it just by immersing in hot water.

Apparently this stuff is used in sign making and is freely available in the US, so far over here I've had no luck and shipping it over would kill me on volumetric weight.

I've yet to do the trawl of local sign makes and plastcs suppliers, but if anybody had any experience with this stuff or any insight on where it could be sourced of if it is sold under a different name, if would save me some wasted time and blank looks.

Erm, not sure if this is the same stuff, but the limited description sounds pretty much like it to me.

Only UK reference to anything like it I can find, anyway

It's better known as Plasti-Card over here in the UK mate.

(Shelford) Really? well i'm used to working with that stuff, though only at smal gauges.

Thanks Nichols, time to make some calls and get some new tools, Mandy will go to the ball! (and PDD are about to get a hell of a lot of new customers...)

(Shelford) Really?

Yup it's the same stuff.

A dream product for the kind of stuff you are looking at making is Flo Form from Bentley Chemicals. If I ever darken the doors of the NA again I might bring some along for you to look at!

In the UK, Sintra is known as Foamex (or FoamX or Fomex)

You can get it from here:
http://www.westwardplastics.co.uk/d_selector.php?cat=foampvc&subcat1=Matt%&subcat2=White

Or you could also try local sign makers. It gets used a lot by them so they may have some decent sized offcuts depending on what you intend to make with it.

This:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8822697535&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1
Is the kind of stuff that folks usually make with it.

Here's some I made earlier:
http://www.horizonslarp.co.uk/index.php?ind=gallery&op=foto_show&ida=137

the stuff is REALLY easy to work with, score it a few times with a craft knife, then snap along the line to cut it.
To form it, drop it in boiling water for about 20 seconds, then pick it up and form it.
Run it under the cold tap to get it to hold it's shape.
Wear a breath mask when you do it, cooking plastic tends to give off nasty fumes so I'm told.
