White Balance (8/25/2006)
You cant put up signs for anything other than GW in there stores etc. They have a we support ourselves and no body else. Which seems to have annoyed people.

To be fair, though, most other big businesses don't let you put signs & notices up in their shops either. I think that's the key phrase -- "their shops." Kind of up to them what they put on their walls, really.

The thing is, GW like to kid us that they're 'here for the little guy' and 'supportive of of the hobby' (provided of course you buy ONLY their products and don't listen to those nasty people who say that there's a hobby outside of their shops)

If they were a small scale shop, then maybe I'd consider it, but not for any big business.

(would you do it for beer if it were the virgin megastore/tesco/blockbuster etc)

From their perspective (and I think they're right), the GW hobby is entirely separate from other hobbies. It's an entity in its own right, not a part of the wider gaming scene (if anything, it's bigger than the "wider gaming scene" anyway).

That could possibly be why people dont like GW so much, because its at odds with the 'gamer community'.

Tesco and the like have notice boards where you can advertise stuff. Ok so Lidle or Sanburisy's dont, but GW player and larper is harder the same kind of competition the example above. Or is it?

They don't see themselves as at odds with the gaming community; just not really that much of a part of it. They recruit from it happily enough (stands at Salute et al) but don't like to see it recruiting from them. All sound business decisions, like it or not; they want their hobby growing, and they want their hobbyists to be spending all their spare cash at GW. That's why GW are a multi-million pound business.

Tesco are far worse! They're selling everything BUT wargames these days, destroying the competition. There are loads of companies out there that are far, far more unethical in every possible way than GW, but for some reason gamers all hate GW -- and I'm sure it's 'cos of GW's success, more than anything else. They're the ultimate example of "making money out of our precious hobby."

GW have a 'Total War' policy when it comes to their competitors. They see themselves as a big games company, among the table toppers at least, and foster links with that in mind. Which is why any GW display at a convention or none-GW club will be impressive: they have a reputation to maintain.

Travelling Man takes the other view, Domination throught integration. Become an integral part of the gaming community as quickly as possible. No job to small, just as long as when a punter thinks 'I need dice' they think Travelling Man.

(yes, I know the quote function only works in IE, but I can't be bothered to use an inferior piece of software simply because of this boards idiosyncronchies).

Well, no idea which Store White Balence was on about.......but we went and did 5 hours at Exeter GW, dressed up two of their staff as well, handed out about 250 leaflets for Shadow Realms (in which their staff helped), we got fed, watered, they paid for our parking, and were almost fawningly gratefull come the end. Oh, and we got photographed......a lot.

I'm fully aware of the general hobby's view of GW.....one that probably was deserved some time back, but more recently they have had LRP events at their own HQ bar set up, and not run or even influenced by them ! Far more of a threat to LRP is Wizards of the Coast, and I for one enjoyed the 25 minute tirade a friend of mine went into years ago at Gen-Con about how WotC should be strangled and then burnt.........as their directors sat next to us in the canteen

The older I grow, the less tolerant of idiots I become.
