Hi. I play a facet in Maelstrom and wanted to improve my costume by having crystals growing out from myself. I've got some cheap gems and spirit gum..along with snaz wax to build up the area around it so that it looks like the gem is actually growing out of me. So far my experimenting with it looks pretty good...especially once i've put a layer of colour over the wax. I was however wondering if anyone had any advice on how to get the wax to harden slightly so that it wont mess up the moment I walk into someone...I have considered putting a layer of glue or liquid latex over the wax...would this work? any other suggestions?

Also does anyone have any tips on moulding the wax. I bought some of the wax spatulas they sell on the snaz site but these are pretty messy for what i am trying to do.

thanx muchly guys.

Make sure the glue you use keeps working when it's hot and you're sweating and running about for 8 hours. A lot of spirit gums only seem to work for an hour or so, although this varies from person to person.

Having never heard of Snaz wax not sure this'll be much help but guessing by the name its waxed based.

You could try moulding it while wearing some latex gloves (or just bare hands) with some vasaline to help prevent it sticking, Or use a tea spoon (or any other small metal instument) thats been either heated with a flame or a cup of boiling water. Also have you tried hairspray? I know its a shot in the dark but it works well on chewing gum, so theres a chance.

Failing that, you could try making a latex base and build up your crystals that way (instead of the snaz wax) Either that of try Mod rok over the top, just add some pva glue (thank you so much for that tip Tree to the water and it helps make it stronger (then pva over it once dry)

Snaz is an rubbish brand try kryolan.

Use moisterizer (e45) to soften wax and make non sticky and get smoother edges

Powder once done

Use wax sealer (makeup product for drag queens) before you paint,

Realsistly what you want to do even a professional would find tricky as wax is an emergency product. Try sculpting what you want in clay and then cast into latex and glue with a latex based glue like prostick

Theres 2 ways that I'd approach this...either use a latex prosphetic like Neil mentioned above or build your costume so it looks like the gems are poking through.

Its easier to attach gems to cloth than attach them to your skin.
Attach them to some cloth by either drilling holes through them to stitch them on or with strong glue. Then place them under some costume you don't mind "customising" (wrecking) cut holes in the costume for the gems to poke through and glue the cloth to the costume so it stays there. Most people do it with foam and latex rather than real gems...it will hurt if you fall on them.

One girl had a brown suede (at least I think it was) tight hood that had gems attached and it came down over one of here eyes to make it look like it was a gem... looked well cool. I believe the gems were just glued in place then decorated for added effect.
